I'm having trouble getting them far out there. I'm throwing them on a st croix mojo swimbait rod and 7'9" hf with cardiff reel and 25 lb cxx. Any advice would be great! Thanks

You may just be not used to throwing baits that heavy and don't want to whip it.

A LONG way, but i have a high end rod designed for baits 5-8 ounces and a great reel.

 

Do not try to whip it, let the rod load up and lob it out there with some force

Just like a normal rod it's just a confidence thing you build up over time. I would do some yard casting to get used to it a little more. It will come naturally after a while.

To add to what everyone has said, the mojo bass 7'9" HF is a little light for huddlestons. You could get a lot more distance with a longer heavier, rod about 8' or longer and rated to 8 ounces or so. A lot of guys even recommend the Dobyns 867 which is 8'6" and rated 4-16 ounces. You get the idea. Like someone said, watch some * videos. All kinds of great info about swimbaits on there.

I totally agree with basshunter.  Your rod is under powered and you have no leverage. The truth is you dont need to have a $300 plus dollar rod. The Okuma 7'11'' Heavy is a great hudd rod.  I-rod a and a few other manufactures make decent swimbait rods for less.  You also do not want to use a rod that is over powered either or it wont load properly.

To the OP, When it comes to swimbait rods, the lure weight rating is rarely ever completely accurate. In the price range you are looking at, I would go with the Okuma Guide series 7'11" xheavy.

I would not throw the Hudson on that Rod. Mine throws a savage gear line through trout a good ways

As others have said, that rod is underpowered for 8" hudds. I have the same rod and use it for hudd 68's & throw 8's on an Okuma xheavy.

Here's a tip until u can get a new rod. If your in a boat, make your regular cast, put your reel in free spool, and back the boat up with the trolling motor. You can give yourself all the distance you need.

The rod you have, while a decent rod, is not an effective rod for Hudds.

 

Listen to what has been said to you in this thread. There has been one rod mentioned a couple times and for good reason. There aren't many guys throwing swimbaits who haven't at one time owned the Okuma Big Bait rods. For the money, they are absolutely a great value.

 

Buy what is recommended by guys who do what you want to do. It will save you time and money in the long run.
