Best Action And Power Baitcaster

Featured Replies

I'm looking to buy a Baitcaster and am thinking about purchasing the duckett ghost with a revo s. If like to use the rod for just about everything if possible- soft plastics, Texas rig, crankbaits, poppers. Just about everything but am not sure what action, power and height I should get the rod in to match everything. I know you should have different rods for the different techniques but what action power and height meets everything the best? Also if that rod and reel combo decent?

7 ft M fast or 7 ft MH fast. I don't have that rod or reel, so I can't comment.

If you want to do it with Crankbaits and not get a moderate tip rod.  Then you're best bet would be the M/F rod.  You would be limited though because you probably wouldn't be able to finish heavier cover.  IMO if you remove CBs, I'd go with MH.  Really you should at least have a moderate action rod for your CB.  See the pinned post about the 3 rods.

There isn't really a rod that can do everything, but the 7' M or MH, Fast Action is pretty close. It will be good for MOST of you mentioned. For crankbaits or lures with treble hooks, you would ideally have something with a bit more flex. It isn't like a MH/F wouldn't catch them, but it would be a bit more difficult to actually play them out and land them.

This is one of the new G.Loomis being introduced:

E6X 853C JWR-- The do it all, medium-heavy casting rod designed to fish medium-sized soft plastics, soft-plastic jerkbaits, 1/4 to 1/2-ounce jigs and even big topwaters. The extra length (7'1") increases tip-speed, which in turn, extends your casting range, helps you recover line quicker and is a big help with hooksets. A great alternative for fishing 4-5" hollow belly swimbaits., and also just a great all around casting rod.

I don't have any experience with the Duckett rods, but if I were picking an all around rod, I'd go with something between 6'6" and 7' and it'd probably be a MH/F. If you're going to fish crankbaits with it, be sure to back your drag off to help compensate for the fast action.

Jraut, I have the 6'8" Ghost with the white Carbonlite on it. The rod might be a little stiff for cranks, but doable. The handle is long so feels more like a 6'6" in actual rod length. Id prob agree with the 7'mh. The 6'10"m Ghost is too light imo. Very nice rods though you won't be disappointed.

Look at the Carbonlite and compare with the Revo S. Got mine for 84.99 with trade.
