Alpster's new rod building toy.....

Last fall I upgraded from my homemade wrapping lathe to a new Renzetti and I just got all the parts to upgrade my homemade (hand drill) cork turning lathe to this one.....Only spent about a $110 total, the Chinese Harbor Freight lathe required an unforeseen custom machine part to attach the keyless chuck, but now she's done and I am pumped. It turns cork like a dream and now I can look into turning my own wood inserts for fly/spinning reel seats and who knows what else. Anyway, here she is.........

WOW!!! So, when are you gonna start accepting orders? :D

Do you have a recommendation for a son-in-law who waits so long to set the hook that the bass is already pooping the lure out? Makes me crazy!

Yep, it's big. I watched for the benchtop model to go on sale for almost a year. Right after Christmas, this one went up for $80 so I grabbed it. It's kind of an experiment. If i really do as much work with this one as I hope to, maybe next year I will get a better one.

Awesome, Ronnie!  Do you have a plan for dust collection yet?  I imagine it will throw it out!!

would hat mean you can also make a custom wood reel seat for spinning stuff??  I know it adds a little weight but I really like the one Flechero built on my rod

Keith,

I turned one grip set and just used the shop vac after I was done. Cleanup isn't too bad, but it does toss some cork shavings and dust. What used to take 45 minutes with the old drill set-up, now takes about 2 minutes. LOL

Russ,

Yep, that's the idea. I have used the same wood grip that is on your rod on a couple of others and I like them too. The extra weight is negligible and it just feels good in your hand.  However, I am more likely to use wood on heavier saltwater rods and fly rod grips. This rig might have some promise for the Cali project we talked about.  :D

Ronnie

If you'll notice on the one I have, that grip has room for some trimming down.  It's bulkier than it needs to be.  Don't get me wrong, I love it but weightwise, it doesn't have to be as heavy.  Looking forward to seeing the new results :D

it doesn't have to be as heavy

There is an arbor in it... it's not solid wood down to the blank so couldn't be lightened up very much.

Very nice Ronnie.  Looks like you will be having some reel fun now - sorry for the pun.  Very nice setup.

Yep, that's part of the plan. I also have a Foredom rotary wood carver to finish them up with. Just a matter of finding the time to play with it. Work is always getting in the way of all my hobbies. LOL

Ronnie

can't wait to see some of the new stuff  :D
