Belly Weight Question

Featured Replies

The crankbait making monkey came to visit me this week.  I haven't made any in a long time, so it's about time.

Anyways, I've always used Devcon 5 min. to fill up the belly weight holes and then sand over them.  Problem is, I'm having a hard time of sanding the wood and the epoxy evenly at the same time.

What do yall use to fill the holes?  Some type of body filler?

Thanks

Someone on TU suggested 2 part plumbers epoxy? I picked up some but have not tried it yet.

Hookem, use the white spackel from HD or Lowes, it dries quick and sands down real easy.

What are you using to make your belly weights?

I use wood putty to fill in any holes prior to sealing. It will soak up the 2 ton upon sealing and will be rock hard. I may have to try the spackeling.

Marty, I'll have to try the spackel.  I drill two separate holes in the belly.  One is made by a 3/8 drill bit (if I'm using a 1/4 oz egg sinker like I usually do).  I use a small finishing nail to drill out the other hole for the line tie.

I tried out some Elmer's wood filler and I'm pretty satisfied with the results.  I used it to smooth over the belly weight hole and to cap off the hole I made while inserting a rattle and it worked out quite well.

easiest thing for belly weights is pencil lead, it fits right in the hole snug, i have a little bit of epoxy in the bottom, and then wood filler on top, clear coat, then paint, then 3 more clear coats.
