Making Jigs

Featured Replies

I was doing some research today. I came accross these jig heads. The Gary klein, Heavy Cover Jig Heads. Losing jigs then have to spend 4 bucks a. Jig, it can get very costly fast. Has anyone used the, Boss jig heads before? i love using jigs. If there a good buy, i'm going to make football jigs as well. Input vuys, help me out

My recommendation is to find some jig heads and skirt material, put a few together and proceed from there.  To get into jig making costs several hundred dollars before you make your first jig.  Seibert Outdoors, Cadman, or small jaw may sell you some heads and www.fishingskirts.com is a good place to buy skirt material.

I've used those boss jig heads a lot. I'm not trying to down the company. I've caught a lot of fish with those heads, but a lot of times the the eyes come enclosed with paint and the weedguards fall out. Also the paint chips real easy. Your best bet is siebert outdoors if you want quality for cheaper than a lot of other companies.

I just recently learned about Sieberts, but I have used the BOSS products a lot and really like them. they have nice stout hooks that work for my purpose. The occasional weedgaurd escape  doesn't bother me since I have a bunch anyways. And a lot of other brands will have eye paint as well. I've cut the cost a bit also. It seems the major cost is in skirting material, the more colors you desire the more you pay. I use a fly tying vice but you really don't need one, it will just be more tedious. I never like rubber collared skirts so I don't one of those collar things either. Rod winding thread or even braid will do nicely touchéd with a little fly head cement. Now I have way too many jigs and need to cull a bunch out!

I Get The Unpainted Jig Heads From (FishingSkirts) , 10 Pk For $5 - $6 , Weed Guards 100 Pk For $6 , Paint Them UP , Use Devcon 2 Ton Epoxy , Seal Your Paint Job , Use Same Epoxy To Glue In Your Weed Guard. "Done" Add Your Skirt and Go Fishing.

This would be the route to go as you can control most of the build process. I have some Boss jigheads and I think they maybe painted instead of powdercoated? Get yourself a fluid bed, some powder paint, and a bottle of Super Glue GEL and you are set.

I have used the jig head you mentioned. Good hook, paint job and weed guard. Nothing wrong with that jig head and it does a good job around weeds so you find me throwing one of those in the summer.

I use football heads much more frequently than any other style. I will buy them painted and unpainted from a couple of different sources, I tie a lot with round rubber skirt material and wire tie my skirts. I hear you on breaking off a jig that costs $ 4.50. By shopping around my cost per jig is less than a buck each. I would pour lead but I do not have the proper ventilation for my work space.

Here is a couple I did with supplies from fishingskirts.com. Everything except the lead and hooks were bought from there.DSCN0028_zpswisnj6am.jpgDSCN0029_zpsgjceluvj.jpg
