How do you attach your braid to your reels? Do you prefer to tie directly to the spool, use tape, or mono backing?

All three. But I prefer backing so I don't have a ton of braid filling a spool for no reason.

For shallow spools that only hold 70 yards I use 1.5 wraps of electrical tape and then tie direct. For spools that hold a normal amount I use cheap mono backing and then tie to the braid.

How much mono backing do you use for a reel that holds, say, 120 yards of the line diameter you're using?

About half, I never want to feel the knot.

I get 3 fill ups from a 200 yard spool of fluoro.

2 fill ups from a 150 yard spool of power pro.

Sometimes 3 depending on what combo it is. I don't need more than 50 yards on a combo I use for throwing light plastics so I get 3. In short just do 50/50 and you'll be fine.

I use mono backing with an alberto knot. When I start seeing or feeling the union knot its time to re-spool. This will take a loooong time though. LOL.

Straight braid or backing is a personal choice.  I go straight braid putting about 1" long strip of painters tape for grip. 

I use only a small amount of cranks of mono to prevent slipping but I want the most possible braid on the reel. Braid will last you more than one season as long as there is enough left on the spool after a season of retying and break offs.

Most of my reels hold 200+ yards of line, so I use backing.

 

That means tying the backing to the spool and using a uni to uni knot or an Albright knot.

Can't you tie direct to a spool with holes? Most spools have them I think.
