Rod epoxy

Featured Replies

For rod building what do kind of epoxy do you prefer?  Do you like it thicker or thinner?  I am torn between the flex-coat or thicker epoxies like the Threadmaster or RodBond.  What are the advantages or disadvantages of each type when bonding cork rings, grips and reel seats?

It's all personal preference from years of working with a certain epoxy...

I prefer Flex Coat Rod Builders 2 part. never tried anything else no need to...

I use U-40 Rod Bond for all arbors, reel seats and cork. For the thread finish I use Cabela's Professional Rod Finish. The Cabela's is a little pricey but, easy to use and I apply two coats of it to the threads.I am thinking about trying Thred Master light on my next build.

I use:

U40 Rod bond for grips and seats

ThreadMaster 5min for tips and buttcaps

Threadmaster Finish for guides

U40 High Build for buttwraps

I used to use the 'Flex Coat' 2 part and it works great, but it mixes to low viscosity like syrup and tends to drip and get messy when applying. I switched to the 'U40 Rod Bond' and like it much better. It mixes to a consistency of toothpaste and stays where you put it. Both will hold anything together, but I prefer the 'Rod Bond' for it's working properties.

I use an epoxy gel for all my (rod) bonding needs and use threadmaster finish.

For bonding, I prefer a thicker product... it stays put and won't run or drip.  I also seem to waste less.

As for finish, I use threadmaster regular for thread finish and just got some of the lite for use as a decal undercoat.

I was using Devcon 2-ton and 5-min for glueing up cork and grips and reel seat to the blank.  I now use the FlexCoat 5-min 2-part.  But, seriously considering the U40 for reel seats.  Use flexcoat hi & lite builds for guides and wraps depending upon the application (with Gudebrod color perserver).  Use FlexCoat tip-top glue sticks for tip tops.
