New To Baitcasters Having Trouble Spooling Up

Featured Replies

I tried first with 12 lb invizix and it went fine but then I tried casting and got a big backlash and had to cut out half of it then I used the rest as backing and put 50 lb braid on top of it. But my problem came when I've tried to spool other reels. One with 16 lb sunline supernatural. I try putting it on just like every video says to make sure the spool of line is coming off on top and going on to the reel the same way it's coming off the spool of line. Once I get some on the reel and try to free spool it all just springs right off. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong I'm trying to follow all the directions but it's not working for me. I also tried with 14 lb sunline reaction fc and the same thing happened. Please help me.

You need to wind it on tightly.. I would also recommend using less exspensive line (mono)

to practice.. Use a bit heavier weight ( bell sinker)

Spend some time casting as well, ( practice )

Don't give up, there is a learning curve, you will succeed!

Sounds like some KVD Line and Lure conditioner is what you need, I had the same problems you are having and after looking around the forums it seemed like a pretty well tried and true method of controlling fluorocarbon trying to jump off the spool, and it worked great.

what reel are you using? You said you are new to baitcasting. Maybe put more brakes on?

X2, FC can be a bit stiff which is why you're getting the"spring" action from it.  I tried filling a spool up one time, that was enough for me.  Went all braid to topshots as I wasn't impressed (my opinion) with fishing straight FC.  Wind it on tight if you're gonna try again and use that KVD Line Conditioner, soak it and let it sit.  Then try it in the morning and see if it helps/helped.

I forgot to say I was having someone hold it and was running it through a book with line conditioner on a paper towel. And holding it with my fingers putting pressure on the line as it goes on the spool. How much pressure do I have to put on it? It was pretty tight I thought it would've been good enough. Do you need to put it on extremely tight? I just got some kvd line and lure too I was using the bass pro stuff. Also I've been tying directly to the holes in the spool.

And I have a Tatula a curado and a lexa. The lexa is the only one that I got the line to stay on.

how much line do you spool on before you let tension off? I've only had that happen on bigger line like 20 pounds fluoro or 16 pound mono And up. All I did was keep pressure till a quarter of the reel is full then loosen up pressure so I can get a steady retrieve going. But to save you money on fishing line check out Aaron martens video on braid backing.

I actually just watched that video. I was putting on maybe a little less than a quarter full then press the button. I've tried the 16 lb mono and 14 lb floro and 15 lb yo zuri hybrid and it happened with all of them. I hope that all I have to do is put more pressure on it. I've watched a ton of videos and I think I'm doing it right but I just don't know. It's driving me crazy I feel so stupid.

Lol don't press the button till your spool is full. By releasing the spool that soon the line hasn't built up enough memory yet. It still has the 5 inch round memory, causing it to unwrap.

Your doing everything right once you put a full spool on there it won't un wrap or if it does only a few foot will come off.

Oh okay I just had it happen when I filled the whole spool with the yo zuri so I didn't want to waste a whole spool of line. So I should fill it and leave it alone maybe overnite until it has memory on my spool. Thank you I'm gonna try it when I get home from work in the morning.

all the line unravelled fRom your spool? Never had that happen before. be for you do check you drag and make sure that its thight be for spooling. That's the only reason I can think of why your spool is unravelling after being filled.

Yup I don't think I had the drag tight when I tried the first time. I'm gonna try it again though I will not be denied. If it's the last thing I do I'm gonna get this d**n line to stay on there. Haha thanks alot man. I really appreciate it.

np good luck.

If you don't know how to cast with a baitcaster, FC is the last line on the planet that you should be using. My advice is go buy some 12# Big Game and spool up the Curado and get proficient at learning to cast one reel before trying to learn to cast on three different reels. Screw the KVD L&L! You don't need it with 12# Big Game! Also, 15# YZ Hybrid is like everyone else's 20# mono. It can be like a slinky as you have found out.

Why are you free spooling it once the line is on?  I like to keep tension on the line at all times except during casts...and then I am hoping the weight of the lure keeps loose line to a minimum.  :teeth:    If you want to check free spool time with line on it, then tape the line.

I use 8# and 12# Big Game on several reels.  It is my opinion there are more supple lines.  It has a tendency to cause loose line on the spool the first few casts after sitting awhile......for me.  Siege will have coils on the water, but no loose line on the spool and is a favorite of mine.  My choices for supple lines...in no particular order...are Sufix Elite, Trilene XL, Silver thread AN40 and Sunline Super Natural.  I haven't used all lines....by a long shot, but these work extremely well for me.

Well I put on super Natural when I got home this morning. I just left it alone and put some kvd L&L I'm gonna try casting tomorrow to see if it worked. I think it will be okay. I didn't know not to free spool it I just thought the line would just stay there. I'm going to make sure to keep pressure on the line so that doesn't happen. Thanks to everyone that posted here. I really appreciate all the help I would be completely lost without this forum.

I'm not sure i follow the free spool issues completely.. You have to have your thumb or some pressure to avoid the spool from taking off independently after clutch engagement.

( thumb on spool ) engage clutch, rod swing, follow thru ( cast ) then, braking forces of the reel comes into play, as your lure approaches your target ( splashdown ) your thumb takes over again... Maybe tighten up the cast control a bit, you maybe running to free, also if your line is being cut by threading thru the holes in the spool, then your going to have a nasty birds nest, lol

Attach your line around the spool & not thru it.

Don't feel stupid, lots of folks always learning, I appreciate your humbleness though..

I am also new with baitcasters and would like to piggyback this thread with a few questions. I get the backing part of the reels. Does it matter what mono # test I use for backing? And does age of the mono matter as well? If I understand things right age and # test of the back don't matter as you will never ( or shouldn't ever) cast enough line to get to the mono anyway. Correct assumption?

First thing you need to do is get it spooled then pull off 40-50 yds oft he spool and put a lil peice of electrical or masking tape over the line on ir spool, this will prevent backlashes from getting deep in tje spool, when u get one lock, your drag down and put ir thumb on the spool with enough pressure so when you turn the handle its kinda hard to turn but will slide o er your thumb, give a few turns them disengage the reel with ur thumb on the spool and pull the line out until the backlash comes out, if it dont come all the wAy out repeat until it does. I dont use tape anymore but i can get bad backlashes out in less than a minute easily, most in a flash.. this your first baitcaster?

Correct
