Casting With Thin Braid...

Featured Replies

On a few occasions I have had my thin braid double-up or catch the large guide while casting with my spinning rod.  Any tips for avoiding this problem?  It's a pain to get out sometimes, and I'm sure it's not good for the integrity of the line.  I use 12-16 lb Braid with a Fluorocarbon leader (6-8lb test) alberto knot

I use 10# braid (so even thinner) and I've never had the braid catch the large rod guide while casting.  The problem I occasionally have is when I miss on a hookset and my bait comes flying back at me the line will get wrapped around the rod tip guide and get knotted up.

Try a smaller reel. If the spool arbor is throwing off big loose coils this might help. This is a reason custom builders put so much thought and effort into guide trains on spinning rods.

Braid = smaller spinning reel spool size

FC Line = larger spinning reel spool size

modify ur casting technique.

large arching casts allow the line to easily twist around itself and rod tip.

try to cast in a straight line.

also closing ur bail 50ft before the lure is at it destination will take the slack out of the line.

a little slack line management goes a long way with braid. i regularly use 5lb braid but it can be easily managed

All my reels are Stradic 2500's

It could also be my leader knot hitting the large guide slowing down the front of the line while the line behind the knot goes forward.  I use the alberto knot which is extremely tiny and very efficient - A few days ago , I brought in a 25 plus pound carb I foul hooked on 15lb braid with a FC (8lb) leader connected with an alberto knot.
