Rage Shellcracker Hooks

Featured Replies

Ok, what size/type hooks are you all using for this Shellcraker bait?

Tried it out today for the first time, and my 3/0 offset swimbait hooks seemed entirely undersized.  Well, the hook would fit fine, but the point would still be buried too far into the plastic, impeding any measure of a hook-set.

I don't use those entirely enough...

When I do its a Owner 5/0 twist lock with the centering pin when rigged vertical. 4/0 rigged horizontal.

Damiki D-Hold 5/0 1/8 oz. Perfect fit. Caught more than I can count on this rig. D-Hold works better than any screw in type I've tried. Stays in place and doesn't destroy the front of the bait. I use this for all the baits I can't get away with a Superline 5/0 Gammy on, which is not a good hook for the Shellcracker.

As I said I don't use these enough, so I have a question...

Do you have more success rigging vertically and swimming it?

Or Rigging horizontal?

Thanks

Ok so, yes indeed, my 3/0 is too small.  Makes sense.

Doesn't matter which way you rig it unless you are swimming it or in regards to hooksets.

I'D go with EWG just to give it room to collapse. 4 or 5 /0 work well.

i throw them into some nasty stuff and that hook works good

Vertical swimming. Fish it around bluegill beds with the wind blowing in on them and hang on. My favorite color is Blue Craw with the tail dipped in chartreuse JJ's Magic. Bluegill are the main forage in the lakes I fish.

Funny you mention that.  I actually did exactly that today...exactly that...it only produced 1 dink.
