Hello guys, haven't been on this forums for a while, but I'm in need of help. I'm looking for a brand new rod dedicated for 3/8oz jigs. I will be using the rod for pitching and flipping to heavy cover and also want to throw football jigs in open water. I narrow my decision on these two models of dobyns. Which one do you guys think will fit best for me? I live in southern California and the lakes I usually fish are lake pyramid, skinner, DVL, and silver wood.

I am with the other two posters, 735 would be my choice here!  The 734 Champion is a bit slower, great rod in my opinion for spooks, spinnerbaits and chatterbaits.  The 735 is a bit faster overall, would still be a versatile rod, and not overpowering for football jigs.  To echo another poster, with you mentioning heavy cover the 735 is definitely the choice.  The little extra power will help you keep a fish controlled around cover.  Hope this helps!

Where do you find heavy cover in SoCal lakes mentioned? Skinner has some shore line tuless and cat tail reeds, very little wood cover in the other lakes.

You want to select the rod based on the line you use and the size hooks you need to get a set on.

I use custom jig rods very similar to NRX 5 power with 8 to 14 lb Sunline Super Sniper FC with 7/16 oz jigs, 5/0 #114 Hook. This is a medium wire forged hook (.046D). It's not easy to cast a 3/8 oz jig with a 5 power rod, the 734 will cast better, however the 735 has better hook sets and control of big bass.

Can't use heavy line in our clear water lakes and get bit! If you can cast the 735 easily, go with the higher power rod. You might want to test the rod first with a 3/8 jig and the line you use.

WRB, if I'm not going to lakes, then I'm usually fishing at el Dorado. I call the tullies heavy cover because I usually try to throw my jigs as deep as I can inside of it. I've recently went to the delta and was using a glx 853 with a curado 51e and 40lb braid. When fishing the tullies, the rod struggles to muscle the fish out and I'm worried that if the bigger fish comes, I might not be able to do anything.
