What Rod And Reel Is Best?

Featured Replies

I do a lot of crankbait fishing. But this year I want to do more soft plastic fishing. WHAT ROD SHOULD I GET THAT WOULD FIT BOTH CRANKING AND SOFT PLASTICS? MH or M. I also plan on a 6.1 to 6.4 reel. Thinkibg of a abu garcia black max.

You could go with a medium/fast action rod for both cranking and plastics.

It depends on what type of soft plastic fishing you want to do and what size cranks you want to throw. If you want to cast larger and deeper running cranks as well as pitching jigs or swimming larger worms then around a 7' MH with a good backbone and a softer tip would work well. If you want to throw smaller cranks and more subtle soft plastic presentations then a 7' m would be your route. Crossing over would leave you with a rod that is lacking for the presentation.

This will be your best option IMO. You're going to have to lean a little more towards a rod for the plastics because a cranking rod will be virtually useless for plastics.

Bluebasser and the others are on the money. Crankbait and plastic rod actions are almost diametrically opposed in their actions. But a medium fast graphite rod will suffice for both cranking and most plastics.

What rods do you have now? I'd suspect it could be used for your cranks. As said a plastics rod would be night and day apart. I'd get a good sensitive rod for the plastics if your really wanting to try them. And I stress the word sensitive. All rods are not created equal here. You'll miss fish if you can't feel them. You want to watch your line for strikes but that's not always possible. If you find the rite rod you can feel a strick on slack line.

Sorry I can't recommend one as ever thing I no about has long sense been dicontinued I'm sure.

You don't have to pay a lot to get one but you'll have to look at a lot. Try tapping the tip of the rod on the floor. Lighty! If you can't feel it in the handle put it back on the shelf.

Ones labeled as worming rods are a good place to start.

But they don't have to be labeled. The best rod I ever had was only 40 bucks. Wish I had 20 more just like it.
