I have a rod that I like the action for fishing chatterbaits on but the d**n things vibrates me to death. Any suggestions for dampening the vibration? I know I may have to switch to fiberglass like I fish crankbaits on but was hoping for another option. Thanks for any advise.

Chatterbaits that thump and vibrate alot are just going to feel like that even if you fish them on glass rod or cheaper rod. The latter two may dampen the vibrations some but you will still feel it. Personally I don't mind the vibrations as I know my bait is running true. When that thump stops, I know the bait has struck some sort of cover or a fish has it.

You'll get the vibration on a glass rod but it won't be so extreme but having the bait vibrate like that is a good thing. The reason why I like it is it lets me know the bait is running right and with that much vibration, any change in it is noticeable right away so it helps with bite detection so I look at it as a good thing.

I've always thought that having those vibrations was an indicator of the rod's sensitivity and the more you can feel it supposedly the better the rod. But if it's bothering you you might want to try some overgrips/rod grips. You can specifically purchase really fluffy ones, really big foamy ones, everything in between or just simply use a tennis overgrip or the like.

 

Another thing might be to just buy a stouter rod or find one that has been reviewed before and people have complained about the lack of sensitivity. 

I've run them on fiberglass and they are ok but just not as stout as I'd like for heavy cover. I remember in the early 90's when I worked at Bass Pro Shops there were guys who used something to dull the vibration. I just can't remember exactly How they did it.

Don't use braid

Brett Hite fishes Chatterbaitd on glass rods, but not do the vibration dampens, but rather for a good hookset.

A longer rod might help.  I have a 6' MHF Berkley Lightning that I keep a 1/2 oz. spinnerbait with Colorado blades tied on.  The whole rod/reel jumps in my hand throughout the entire cast.  Put the same type spinnerbait on a 7' MHF rod, and vibration is significantly reduced.

It might help if you put some grip tape on the handle. It's cheap to try out. You don't have to get the fishing specific ones, go to Dick's and get a pack from the tennis dept.

You want to feel that vibration, any change in it lets you know to set the hook. 

I do know what he is saying though and totally understand. When I would throw a chatter bait on my 7'2" XF Crucial with braid it kinda drove me crazy after a while. It would make my hand start to fall asleep or go kinda numb and start to tingle. Since I pretty much stopped using braid everything is just fine now. Get some good copoly and you should be ok.

I've got 15# mono on my reel and it still jumps in hand.  Would hate to try braid if it made it worse.
