Will We See The Ned In Mlf?

Recommended Posts

I've been waiting to see if someone will break it out but no one has; I'm surprised. I've seen shows taped this year that they were struggling to get bit and I'm just surprised they didn't throw it.

Thoughts?

Wouldn't surprise me at some point to see someone pull it out. Kind of foolish not to given the rules. I can assure you one of the Select anglers this year will at least have them onboard during competition ;)

If guys are using new techniques like the Ned rig, they are doing their absolute best to keep it secret as long as they can.  That would be tough on MLF though.

Twice now the Ned has won the Thursday night tournaments at a well known power fishing lake in the area. Last night it was my buddy and his dad that won with it. I tried to force my usual power fishing baits on them and they weren't having it, 2 fish was it. Picked up a Ned and got another keeper and lost 2 more that would have put us right there with them. We pulled up to the are they were fishing with neither of us having any fish. I caught my first fish of the night on my first cast with a football jig before we crossed paths. Both of us were frustrated, I told him to try the Ned where he was heading. Caught another keeper on a squarebill before we turned to follow them down the bank. Watched him catch his first fish of the night, 4 pounds and the eventual big bass of the night. Followed that up quickly with another nearly 4 pound fish on the Ned while my partner lost a good fish, also on the Ned, and I caught another keeper on the Ned. We left to give my buddy the spot since he had 2 good ones and a good chance at winning. My partner lost another good fish on the Ned on our last spot before weigh in.

It may not be an ideal tournament bait in lakes with lots of big fish, but man when the going gets tough I don't know if there's a better way to catch fish. In the MLF format it would almost be unfair if they were eating it like they usually do.

That's what I was thinking. That format is not always about big fish, just bites; and I haven't seen a bait that gets more bites than that little thing. We all know they know about it.

I guess my process is, the pros on MLF, even though every 12 inch + bass counts, still fish like pros, if ya know what I mean. On the last few I've watched it was more about location than anything, because everybody seemed to be fishing similar deals, but one area would hold fish, and another one wouldn't. The guys who realized that differentiated a "fishy looking" spot, to a true fish holding spot based on clues they received, were the guys that caught em, the other guys didn't

So you are night fishing with this bait as well?  I'll definitely fish it at night if that's the case. I guess it doesn't matter how small the bait is really.....just didn't think of it as a night bait

Absolutely. Bass around here really seem to focus on craws at night, so fishing the Ned slowly along the bottom at night can be a killer. Not just for bass either. In 1 hour after dark last year we had; flathead catfish, channel catfish, white bass, crappie, walleye, drum, sunfish, smallmouth bass, and spotted bass.

i would think in MLF a UL would crush it a lot of times. You can weigh everything and those .5# fish can add up when your catching 4-5 to someone's 1.5-2# fish. I get it wouldn't be ideal all the time but you can put a hurt in fish with some tiny jerkbaits, rooster tails, grubs, ect.

If I was on MLF I'd just throw 2 baits, the Ned rig and a Senko, It might take me 40 fish to hit 30 lbs but Id be there quickly ;)

Love that show but it seems like the show always sets them up for super tough fishing conditions and it gets boring to me.  Seems like they all flip or pitch most of the time.  Only a select few like Gary Klein and Aaron Martens do any type of finesse fishing.

Honestly on MLF, any type of slow, methodical, co tact bait fishing is probably considered 'finesse' to the guys on their, because ideally, you are probably fishing some sort of reaction bait, covering water, and catching fish every handful of cast. I've also watched Mark Davis break out the spinning reel plenty of times.
