Storing Bucktail Jigs And Hairjigs

Featured Replies

I tied a bunch of bucktail and hair jigs this winter. I stored them in a regular plano tackle box. They all seem to slide to one end and all of the hair is really bent and curved. How do you guys store your hair jigs? Can i somehow fix the ones that got bent?

What works good for keeping the hair organized is sliding a ring made from soft plastic tubes (Gitzit) , cut about 3/16 wide over the jig head and down just above the hook point. The soft plastic ring keeps the hair organized. Put the individual hair jigs into small plastic zip lock bags, roll the bag into a cylinder and place the rolled bags into a larger zip lock. bag. Orgianize by color and weight, use a Sharpie pen and identify the larger zip lock bags.

I don't store hair jigs in individual plastic box compartments.

Can also try to find a supermarket with those old school twist ties and use those!

Get 1" thick hi-density foam sheeting and then take a 3600 or 3700 utility box without dividers in it. Cut the sheet so it fits in the slots snug so you don't have to glue it down, and then use hobby knife or razor blade and cut a small slit for the hook to go into and lay them out how you want. When done you'll have a nice dedicate hair jig box that will keep the hair straight.  BTW, just drop the jig in water for a bit and the hair will eventually straighten out.

You can steam a Bucktail fly and straighten it out. Lay it out straight and it should dry straight.

Use a divided Plano box with compartments as large as your jigs are long.  Fill the compartments full of jigs so they can't slide around.
