Berkley Big Game Green Braid On 6'6 Mh Rod

Featured Replies

So, I finally went all in and got some braid. Now, this is the obvious follow up to my last post.

*How essential is a leader if I'm only fishing in a lake with coontails?

*Can I fish topwater frogs with this braid?

*Are shakeyheads good to use with this?

The knot I used was, once through lures eye, then back through; then I pinch at the eyelet and wrap around 5 times then put back through the lines eye and pull tight.

I want to maximize the uses for this.

I have 12# mono on a 6'6 MF rod.

I'm going to post up my lures/plastics and I'd like an answer as to which rod I should use.

My apologies with all of these "which line" posts lately but I'm just trying to get to the bottom of it and I know you guys are the best group online!

You're gonna fish frogs and shakeyheads on the same rod?

  • Author

No, haha. I was just asking like, which is better for the frogs and shakeyheads between the two rods?

Any other help

No, but I have a question.

How do you manage to fish 12# mono on a spinning setup?

  • Super User

I'm confused too, so what pound test braid did you get? What kind of rods are you using? Shaky heads should be fished on 8lb to 10lb mono or if you have the right rod and know how to set a drag, 10lb to 15lb braid and leader. Frogs in coontail are fine, minimum 30lb braid and here is where things get a little hair as personal preference comes into it. I like using a shorter rod for frogs, I was using a 7'6" but I didn't like it, I went to a 7' and that was great but I found the sweet spot for me is a 6'10" H-F and my buddy likes his 6'6" H-F but I wouldn't use any lighter than a MH.

I've always used 10-12# mono on my spinning setup and it works/worked perfectly.

Thanks for the help guys!

Ive also fished 12lb mono on a spinning set up and works awesome. I actually fish it regularly

I just got done fishing the spro bronzeye shad around treelines. Had about 6 bites but couldn't get any of em. The frog doesn't have good movement with this braid. It always walks to the left

  • Super User

Well that sucks. How did they get off? Or did you not get them hooked at all?

Big Game green braid in what lb test 20?

The faster moving lures don't need a leader, the underwater lures you could go with a leader.

I didn't hook em. They hit it and I reacted too early haha.

Do I need a leader with top water frogs? I have a Hell of a time getting good movement with them! Well, I only used my spot bronzeye shad.

I tried my horny toads and my rage toads but I never ever have luck on those and I'm using the moaner screwlocks with the weight

I see above you mention that the braid is impeding the action of your frog.  I would think the line is very unlikely to be the culprit.  Walking a frog takes some getting used to, so practice some more and I'm pretty sure you'll start seeing better action.

I would not recommend a leader for topwater frogs.

For horny toads, I have better luck using unweighted screwlock hooks.
