Looking For A New Casting Reel...

Recommended Posts

I've narrowed down my probable choice to the Lew's LFS 7.5:1 which I found on Ebay for $83 new. Anybody out there have any pros/cons of this reel? Is there another reel out there under $100 that is better? I would like to get something in the 7+:1 range. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I recently bought that same reel in 6.8:1 and I absolutely love it. Very easy to cast and definitely worth the price.

I've looked and looked and I can't find the Tatula anywhere online for $89. Is this an in-store deal somewhere?

Check ebay.  Then keep checking.  There is some price volatility.  Not sure its just Daiwa.  Quantums were reel cheap just a couple months ago, but now I don't see the same prices.  Maybe its just because this is peak demand period.   Keep an eye out.  I just got a Type-R from a place that had offered me a coupon on top of a discount and only paid $100.

I have the LFS and the BB1 Pro and though the LFS isn't nearly the pro I think it's a great reel for the money. For $80 new, I would get it and not look back. I read a lot of reviews on the LFS before I bought it and the only negative I can recall was the drag loosening up after a year or two but so far haven't had any issues. I plan to purchase another one. It's very light and smooth. It casts nicely but not as far as the Pro bit fishing from a boat really don't think I need super long casts anyway.

Originally, I bought the Quantum PT100, I just thought I'd like the flip option. I actually really liked the flip switch but after catching 10 fish, most 8-17", one 4lb over two days the gears started making noise, then developed a squeak so took it back and got the LFS.

Have you ever used a casting reel before? I'm asking because there are some things you'll need to know, so if you are experienced with a casting reel, I would suggest finding a store where you can hold the Tatula, it is a little bulky and it palms different than most other reels. If you have little to no experience with a casting reel, you may want to find a different one other than the Lews LFS speed spool. The reel is a really good and I'd say it is one of, if not the best $100 reels on the market but it uses only the spool tension control and magnetic brakes which in my experience teaching other to use casting reels, are the hardest reels to learn on.

Which Quantum did you buy?

I've used various baitcasters for probably 15+ years now. I'm just trying to get some opinions on reels in that price range to see what I want to buy.

I'm clueless when it come to reels.  I pretty much like them all.  :teeth:

Excellent reel.  I've got 3, but if I was well off, I would have had 4.....lol.  Problem is I have a few other models I'd like to try.  The Fuego would be another great option if one came up for sale in like condition anywhere near that price.  Unfortunately it isn't a 7 something ratio.  I often buy used reels.  You can get some very good deals on quality reels.  Better than paying full price...or even 15-20% off.

I have a daiwa lexa and a lews lfs ss. I got them both for under $100, and they are both great reels. If you have a shop by you I think it is extremely helpful to hold both before you purchase. Some reels feel better than others for different people. I personally prefer my Lews bc it is lighter and fits my hand a little better.
