Got a question for you guys;

My dad just moved to a new house on a decent piece of land. Most of his property is wooded, and of course I'll be hunting it this year!!

My season won't start until November, but in the next week or two I wanted to get out with my camera and maybe an attractant or supplement and see what's out there.

Question is; what are you guys putting out in front of your cameras this early to attract deer? I normally don't put stuff out until very late, so this is kinda new to me.

I like salt or mineral licks. Bucks are growing their antlers right now so they need those added minerals. 

x2 on the salt and mineral licks/protein blocks. 

Mineral blocks, salt blocks, horse and mule feed, vegetables from the garden, unused fruit, etc..

A host of items will work, it may also attract other animals too. You got a good trail? Set up on the trail, no food needed..

Corn and peanuts.  Great for deer; Great for squirrels. 

We do corn. I want to try using sugar beets with molasses pellets. I might also try vanilla extract or molasses on scent wicks or place on branches.

I tried the sugar beet Crush but stuff is to expensive for such a lil bag. But another you can try is peanut butter. Cut the bottom of your peanut butter jar, and screw the jar top to a tree about three feet high and screw the jar back on the top.

For corn, minerals, etc just find you a local feed store with low prices. Some feed stores can be pricey too. My uncle gets 100lb bags of corn for around $13 when in WVa. Around me I can only find 50 lb bags around $7 to $10. Only other thing when coming to bag corn you might find a brand with more trash than corn in the bag.

I tried deer cane powder bag too but a pain by instructions wise. It said you must mix it with water first, so I had to use water from the house and walked to my spot. It's a good walk too so the 5 gallon bucket wore my arm out. If use that stuff find a Creek near by lol. My cousin just buys the big bag of mineral rocks from tractor supply.

I started using the Deer Cane Black Magic a few years ago, and I'm really impressed with how it works. The deer will walk past feed to get to the lick site. I have also read that you can achieve the same results by mixing strawberry or grape kool aid powder and salt.

salt wont soon be great, its best in early spring and summer. the reason is in areas that lack it, it balances out everything green in their diet. acorns are starting to drop now, corn is probably ready in certain areas... food sources are shifting big time. I had a cam out in a saddle for a week two weeks ago and had 4 bucks and a few doe's with fawns on the cam. Zero bait of any kind, not even scent.

Around here the deer have backed out of soybeans & are now feeding in the Acorn stands.

Corn comes into play later, with soybeans, oak then corn a distant 3rd. I quit using doe in heat years ago..

Look for persimmon trees on the land. If you have a good persimmon tree, after the first frost set up on that. There is only one thing that will pull a buck off a persimmon tree when they are ripe.... Wink Wink
