Worm And Jig Rod Line Suggestions

Featured Replies

I went out and purchased a Mitchell 300 real, which could hold 10-14 pound mono and 10-20 pound braid, and paired it with a Shimano Stellus worm and jig rod. My question is what pound test should I use while using the worm and jigs with my Mitchell 300? I will probably mostly be rigging in Senkos that are Wacky Rigged.

Isn't the Sellus Worm and Jig rod a casting rod? And aren't you talking about a spinning reel. I am confused.

Well, regardless I personally wouldn't put anything better than 10lbs mono on that reel. Maybe your best bet is to go 20lbs braid with a good 10 or 12 pound fluoro leader. Wont be the ideal setup but it should work just fine. Ideally you would fish the worm and jig on a casting reel with 15-20lbs fluoro or 40-60 lbs braid.

no, I have a spinning reel on it.

Nice, I didn't know they made a Sellus worm and jig rod as a spinning setup. What kind of line are you used to using? Have you ever fished anything that heavy on spinning gear? I Personally don't like going any heavier than 8lbs mono on a 3000 size reel but I know guys who do it. All of my spinning setups have a braid mainline of 10-20 lbs. Braid is always easier to manage but you will have to use a leader unless your water is really stained.

Had to look up the Shimano Sellius spinning rods and they make M & MH, no idea what the power vs action is like. Go with 8 lb Trilene XL 8 or 10 lb mono with this outfit.

I'll leave the line type up to you, but 8-10 pound should be fine.

What WRB & FinCulture said ...Also consider Sufix Elite 8lb. - 10lb. mono .

15lb. to 20lb. braid plus 8lb. to 10lb. FC or P-Line CXX for leader are good candidates as well .

When I just used a spinning rod all the time I used ten or twelve pound line

I still do mostly use spinning reels and don't have any issues with 12-14lb mono and up to 30 braid.
