single bladed willow leag spinnerbaits

Featured Replies

i keep reading about folks prefering the single bladed willowleaf spinnerbaits and im wondering what in particular makes them preferable to some people.  I know RW is a big fan and a few others.

ive always used tandem bladed willows or a big willow with a small colorado.  i do use single colorado's at night however.

just curious,

Chunk them at a stumps, actually hit the stump and then let it helicopter down  ;)

If I'm fishing a big spinnerbait deep in the summer, I like a single willowleaf blade.  It has less resistance than a big Colorado blade and is easier to fish faster and still keep it deep.

so the reason for prefering a single blade over a tandem is that it stays down better?  thanks for replys

I like them when i m fishing deep clear water lakes

That 's one of the reasons the other one Catt mentioned it: helicopter, double blade spinnerbaits don 't helicopter.

In addition to the good points mentioned, I seem to be able to get a single willow spinnerbait through cover easier, with a lot fewer hang-ups. particularly in weeds.

First off I fish a willow leaf 99.5% of the time

Second on every cast as soon as the spinner bait touches down I let it helicopter to the bottom.

Third I lift it off the bottom and start my retrieve

Fourth I run it into any thing in the water

Fifth when I run it into any thing I kill it letting it helicopter, some times not all the way to the bottom.

SINGLE Vs. TANDEM

> The single-blade spinnerbait generates less water-resistance (greater depth) and less weed-resistance than a tandem spinnerbait

> The single-blade spinnerbait helicopters when killed, while most tandem spinnerbaits fall like a dead duck

> The single-blade spinnerbait produces a distinct "thumping" sensation, while double-blade spinners dilute each other's throb

> The tandem spinnerbait produces more flash than the single blade spinner, but not without a hitch:

1. In murky water, 'throb' is far more important than flash, because there can be no flash where there is no light

2. Bass "invariably" strike the skirt and not the spinner.

COLORADE Vs. WILLOWLEAF

> The Colorado blade rotates at the slowest forward-speed, the willow-leaf requires the fastest forward speed (Indiana is middling)

> The Colorado blade produces the most "vibration", the willow-leaf blade produces the least vibration (Indiana is middling)

> The Willow-leaf blade runs deeper than a Colorado, in any case, depth can be governed by lure weight rather than blade shape

Speaking only for myself, when faced with deep water or clear water I typically turn to soft-plastic lures (jigs, worms, craws).

The only time I might reach for a spinnerbait is in shallow murky water (there's plenty of that)

Therefore, for my purposes the 'Single-Colorado' is the only spinnerbait I ever need.

Good lesson, RoLo. Thanx!

I would add that I'm fishing double blade SBs (willow+ colorado)in clear water in shady situations, weeds, and deeper water (like 4 to 10 ft)

I like to fish it alot like Catt. I think it's called  "slow rolling", kinda like fishing a T-rig. I've used the mini spinners this way too with a single Willow or a single Colorado. I use my tandems with a large Willow and small Colorado  when I'm locating and I want to cover alot of water...cast and retrieve.
