Hey everyone,

 

I have 4 rods that are 2 piece, and I want to take them to South America during Christmas. Is there any rod tube you could recommend that will hold all these rods at once? I don't have a car, and BPS, Cabelas, and other fishing stores are far from me, so I can only order online. Any suggestions? I would prefer a strong tube to avoid any damage.

Go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy some PVC Pipe in a big enough diameter to hold all of your rods, cut to length and buy some end caps and you are set.

Make your own out of PVC pipe.  It will be a little cheaper - not a lot cheaper.

I use 2", with a cap on one side and a screw out cleanout plug on the other, keep in mind the screw in plug can get tight, 

i also add some foam to the inside of the ends to cushion the ends of the rod.

Thanks for your replies. I was considering making my own tube with the PVC pipes, but I realized I can't lock the tube. I heard that some people got their stuff stolen at the airport before the baggage claim, so I don't want to risk my rods getting stolen. I forgot to include this, but I was hoping there were tubes with a lock security system as well.

take the caps that slide over the end of the PVC tube and put them on the tube.  Using a drill make a hole that goes all the way through both sides of the cap and the PVC tube.  Find a lock or cable that will fit said hole and you have a lock.  Seal the other end up using PVC cement and you're as theft proof as you can get....

Ran into the same dilemma as you when I was heading down to Naples, Fl for a vacation. Knew I wanted to fish the pier and the inter-coastal for a few days. After the extra baggage fee, purchasing a rod/building one, and then worrying about my precious gear getting mishandled at the airport I made a no brainer decision. I bought a cheap rod at Walmart for $50.00 used it all week, and as I was leaving the beach the last day I gave it to a kid. Problem solved.

I would do the same thing as you lol, but the thing is that I'm carrying 2 rods for my friend. The other 2 are mine that I bought for cheap, and they are much cheaper here than in South America...

As long as I use the TSA locks, it's fine. I never had issues with them cutting my locks.

I was looking at both. I will probably buy the Plano. I liked the design a lot better.

^^This !!^^ ... Exactly what I did for travel - EXTREMELY tough !!

If you dn't want ot make your own, I can personally vouch for the Cabelas travel rod tubes.  They don't lock so I'm not sure i'd check them, but I was able to get four 3-piece travel rods to Baccarac and back by carrying them on the whole way.  The tube is very well made.

I have two Plano travel tubes. The tan version and the black one without wheels. Both are very sturdy and haven't had any issue traveling with them.

You could always get a locking hard case for golf clubs.  Could fit a lot of other tackle in there too, just fill it with clothes to pad it to keep things from moving around.

Id bring a second lock for the way home. I lived in Ecuador for a year, and would be shocked if they didn't open everything,

Thanks for all the help. I've measure my rods, which are less than 41 inches long, so I won't need the lock. I will just carry them with me. I've looked through the Cabela's rod travel case, Plano Airliner, and Flambeau Bazuka, and I will go with the Plano one since it goes from 47-88" long. I might need it to carry my 7ft rod someday as well.

 

Now, time to find one for a good price...

Bought mine at Academy but it isn't the one advertised on their website. Pretty sure I paid about $35 for it a couple years ago. Works well with no issues...except for keeping track of the lock keys
