I am getting a new reel and need help on deciding. I narrowed it down to a lews bb2 pro or the new shimano curado. Any thought?

Go Shimano and don't look back.

Shimano for build and future parts needs, which may come up, although I have not  needed to replace anything in my 10 year old Curados, nor any of the newer models.

Both are very nice reels. Pick one and go fishing.

Get on ebay and bid on quamtum EXO reels.  You can save 150$ on a 300$ reel.  Just sayin...

I'd go with lews. The bb2 has a wider spool, I'd go with the BB1 pro, tournament pro, or them team pro on sale at tw unless you need the wider spool.

I always laugh when I hear people say get a shimano because you can get parts easily in the future. Shimano is the only reel comany I have a hard time getting parts from. Either discontinued or always out of stock.

get the BB2 for the added line capacity for you are probably going to be using bigger line ....

If you're going to use it for pike most of the time then get the bb2. If you will just use it occasionally for pike the BB1 or tournament pro should be fine.

I have three Curado's and love them, needed new reel and instead of getting another Curato for $179, I paid $239 for Lew's Team Lite Speed Spool. The Lews is quite a bit lighter but truth-be-told I am not sure it's worth the extra. Next reel I will stick with Curato's.

Pike are rather toothy critters so a heavier line is advised.  In which case a reel capable of spooling a decent amount of line is preferable.  However, you could always go with a smaller reel, lighter line and simply use a heavy leader.  Your choice.  I have no experience with the BB2 or new Curados so can't give any advice there.  I imagine it will come down to personal preference.  I like my Curados.....especially the 201E7.  My Lews TP is a fine little reel.  Thankfully I don't have to choose between the two.

I 2nd this. Good luck getting parts from Shimano. Daiwa is where you want to look if you are talking about Customer Service, they are great. Never had to deal with Lew's CS but love their reels as well

The only thing wrong with Abu Gracia is that I have an Stx right now. I broke my sx and they gave me a Stx. Can't argue there. But when I cast now the reel makes an odd noise. And I can feel the gears cranking in a bad way when I reel in sometimes. I just want to get a smoother reel. And I've only had my Stx for around 2 months

I have tournament pros (not the newest one), bb1 pros, and team pros.

I think a lot of the lower end lews reels are made in china but I'm not sure. Hopefully the new tournament pro is still made in korea, but I'm not sure of that either.

I have four Tournament Pros and I think they are excellent reels for the money.  I like their light weight and compact size.  They cast very well, have a nicely-adjustable combination of centrifugal and magnetic braking, and have a smooth, strong drag.  I know I'll buy more of them in the future.  Mine were all purchased from the big auction site for about $165 each.

 

My favorite budget reels are the two Daiwa Tatulas I also picked up from eBay sellers at under $100 apiece.  They are heavier and bulkier than the Lews TPs, but I can't imagine a better reel for the price.

You stated the reel's application is for swimbaits, what rod are you using? What weight swimbaits?

The Lew's BB2 is a light weight reel at 6.8 oz and good IPT @ 28" w/6.4-1 or 31" w/7.1-1, line 14 lb/190 yds.

My concern is reel/rod balance, 6.8 oz reel balances good with 3.4 to 4 oz rods, swimbaits weigh more in the 5 to 6 + oz range.
