I usually have 15 lb braid tied on, but after today's outing I took it off because the line kept getting icy as well as the guides. Is there any difference between mono / fluoro in this situation? Other than manageability 

Seeing as you're somewhere where line and guides will freeze, I recommend mono. Reasoning is because braid absorbs just a little bit of water and freezes up and causes problems. Mono doesn't (or absorbs less), so you will get a little bit less freezing in the cold temps.

 

I do plenty of ice fishing in the winter, and my recommendation for you is to use low memory monos. Another factor would be to use the lightest line size you can get away with for your fishing situation so that the line is more manageable. I don't truly believe in "ice lines" but a good quality mono would be good in warm and cold weather. My favourite for its price so far is seaguar senshi. I also like to use a little bit of KVD Line conditioner, but I'm not positive it makes a huge difference.

 

If you believe that you want FC for whatever reason, feel free to try! I am trying some 3# FC for my ice fishing this year but I have a gut feeling that mono would be easier in terms of manageability at the end of the day.

Is your braid old? I fish extreme conditions with it and my PP doesn't absorb that much water wherein it starts to freeze. I would first try a new spool of line. IF that doesn't work I would try to use ice fishing specific line. It may not cast as well as regular line but will prevent your issues of line freeze. Keep us posted.

I was using PP super slick, spooled on from this past summer. I don't know 100% if it was the line freezing up or not, but every now and then it would feel stiff going through the guides. Again, I don't know if it was due to the line being old or what.

Braid is all I will use in freezing conditions. Guides freezing is going to happen with all lines.

I prefer mono or copolymer when it's below freezing but I'll still use braid on my spinning reels. 

Following this thread because I haven't found a good solution yet for braided line freezing in winter (and I really don't want to change the line).  I've just been occasionally breaking the ice out of the guides and when the line gets ice particles on it, it reel it in between my fingers to melt/knock off the ice.

If the braid is stiff it could be due to water retention. Re-soool with a fresh spool of PP and let us know if your issues continue. If it does its water retention not the condition of the line. And if the issue is resolved, it was the opposite.

I went ahead and bought a spool of 10 lb regular power pro. It wasn't below freezing, so I didn't have any problems today. Once it gets cold again I will let you all know.
