7:1 Gear Ratio?

Featured Replies

I read that reels with a 7:1 ratio or higher were good for baits you work with your rod. Is this true? Would this make them good for top waters and Texas rigs?

What you heard is true.

I Always use a 7+ reel when throwing anything on top, working on the bottom or any time you need to take up line quick.

We will be saying 10:1 before too long.

I prefer 7: for contact/feel lures like work or jig. It picks up slack line quick for increased sensitivity.

A 7.1:1 will work great for that, they aren't bad for lures not moved with just your rod too.

Lipless crankbaits is one of them. Rattletrap, Redeye Shad, Spot, etc

Thanks for the replies!

I even like a 7.1 for slow rolling a spinnerbait on the bottom.
