What's The Best Sweet Beaver Setup?

Featured Replies

I want to try out the sweet beavers so I need suggestion on weight sizes, rods to use for it, and most importantly colors to use

Depends on cover. For general casting a 7 foot mh will work. If you are flipping bushes you may want a H. I've you are punching mats you may want a XH.

I use weights from 3/16 up to 3/8. I throw these on a 7 foot MH with 14 pound line. Casting to bluff walls. If I'm pitching to cover I'll use braid. Sometimes with a leader and sometimes not on a H 7'3 Rod.

Colors:

Green pumpkin

Dirty sanchez

Cali 420

Penetration

Dirty wizard.

I've never punched with them. No grass where I fish. Mostly casting and pitching to wood.

For pitching to wood, I typically use a 7'-7'3 MHF casting rod with 15-20 lb flouro and a 1/4 oz weight. One of my favorite ways to fish.

I just bout a 7'3" Heavy dobyns savy micro guide with 15lb flourocarbon for flipping and also casting. I got main vain and infection color sweet beavers and 3/8 oz weights for them. I am worried the heavy action rod will cause me to lose sensitivity and hurt casting

You should be fine. I assume by heavy you meant a 734. If that's the case you will be just fine. I own champion 734 and it does the job. The 734 have a light tip to go along with the back bone. Plus it fishes more like a medium heavy in comparison to other rods in industry.

Shaky head as well

A smallie beaver(red/black, houdini, fried watermelon, and white) is deadly on a shakeyhead.

As for the sweet beaver I like the same colors and in light cover I go with the lighest weight possible and In heavey cover I go with a 1/4-3/8. I fiash It on a mh rod, 7-1 reel, and 15 lb. Berkley Big Game.

I use the Sweet Beaver almost exclusively for punching matt's, with and without a skirt.

I use a 7' 2" H/Xf Quantum Smoke micro guide rod, on a Curado G reel w/ 65# power pro.

They are an incredible jig trailer. With skirt or not.  Go with YOUR confidence color.

What size hook would you use with the sweet beaver?

i throw them on a 7/8oz punching jig or just texas rig them with a 1/2oz or 3/4oz tungsten weight

I usually fish them on a jig rig in and around cover and they are very productive in a C-rig as well. Weight depends on depth and cover like every technique. I've never tried them on a shaky head but I could see that being a good setup as well.
