Clear hydrilla lakes in winter

Featured Replies

10 feet of visibility, 40 to 45 degree water temps, and expanses of submerged weeds. In the summer I nail em with weightless senkos or trick worms and grass jigs. How can I fish this type of fishery in winter. Yes I know slow down and fish slow and no there are no rocks to hold warmth and no structure. The bass have plenty of cover with all the weeds.

Is the grass dying?

if its clear with hydrilla they should be growing pretty deep, with the water temps the shallower weeks are probably brown. But those deeper areas should still have green grass. If there is green grass find the outside edge of them. Points and areas that have structure which leads up to shallower areas.

Rip a trap outta the grass....

Once the grass is dead it holds heat!

During winter I target the deeper outside grasslines; that doesn't mean there will not be a shallow bite; it means this is where I start.

as for techniques; the same senkos, trick worms, & jigs should still produce. Spinner baits (chatter baits) slow rolled above the grass & crank baits including lipless can be productive.

In cold water bass do not stop feeding they just feed less often; their metabolism slows down, their brains slow down, so the bass slows down.
