Panfish rod combo

Featured Replies

Anyone have any good rod combo suggestions I should look into getting I can't seem to find many and I figured this would have the answer I need

GX2 Ugly Stik (5'6" - Light) with a Shimano IX2000R

The Shimano reel is only $20 and the GX2 can easily be found for $30 or $40.  I've never had a problem with either.  Now if you're pulling in 5lb panfish, I might upgrade to the IX4000R but for anything less, the 2000 works just fine.

I've bent that pole almost in half and it holds up to anything and everything I throw at it, time and time again

You didn't say what kind of a budget you were working with? These combos can range from $25.00 up to a couple of hundred! So I'd really like to know what you have in mind, price-wise?

I really like the St. Croix Panfish Series spinning rod I have.  It's the first budget-priced long ultralight rod I purchased that truly has a fast/Xfast action.  It's a great rod for around $120.

Tight lines,

Bob

I can't agree more. For me a Royal, Adams and Ausable Wulff patterns do it for me on my 5 wt.

Do yourself a favor and buy a Shimano Stimula, 5' 6" UL and a Daiwa Sweepfire 2B reel.  I've been throwing light crankbaits, Rat-L-Traps (1/4 oz), grubs, and other light lures for crappies and sunfish.  For only about $40, it's a killer combo.

I would say anywhere up to $100 but it has to have a rod and reel thanks!

You can get a really nice B n' M rod with matching Pflueger #2920 President for under $100.00. Check out Grizzly Tackle Co. online for both. You won't be disappointed.

Berkley 5' light lightning rod with a cardinal spinning reel on it. It's great for bluegill and sunnies.

Thats exactly what I have, but its a ultralight!

I was considering an 6' 6" ultralight Browning Air Stream ($60) with a Pflueger President 6920 ($50) to cast light jigs for crappies and other panfish.

Any thoughts?

I have been looking at the ugly-stik USSP 702UL and either a Penn Fierce, Battle, or Conflict in the 1000 size. I just got a Spinfisher V 4500 for X-Mass and fell in love with Penn again. Last Penn I purchased was a 430ss a loooong time ago. They are still not US made...but are all-metal and very smooth.

Can't disagree with the fact that FishUSA is the best always going out there to get stuff

Been fishing panfish with ultralight and lures my whole life.....20 plus years.   I've tried almost every brand of ultralight reels and rods under the sun.  Not bragging....just comes with the territory when fishing panfish for so long.  With that said, I try to always improve my equipment, but keeping it under a 100 bucks.  The differences between ultralight high end and low end gear is not as vast as say bass fishing gear for example.   So, currently I've stumbled upon this setup and its the best I've used so far.   Dicks sporting goods sells a Field and Stream Tec Lite ultralight rod.  It's the 6 ft version.  Green color, cork handle, two piece.   It has THE perfect action for slinging light jigs 1/32 to 1/16th oz.   They are 49.99, but should be at least 10 bucks off if you fill out the DSG survey on the receipts, or just get a coupon on their website.   I pair this with a Pfleuger Trion, 120 size.  I think it's the best bang for your buck in ultralight panfish reels.   Smooth and durable.   And 29.99.   I've got four of these combos now.   I would highly suggest you at LEAST go pick one of these rods up at DSG just to check it out.
