Smoothdrag Problems

Featured Replies

So I've installed the some smoothdrag washers in a couple of my high end reels, a Calcutta 200D and Zillion TWS. I installed them both with what I would consider a fairly light coat of Cals drag grease to all the washers. Afterwards I found that although the drag was smoother they both had noticeably weaker drag strength throughout the range of the drag and when I want the drag to have some strength to it I have to tighten it almost to lock down. Could anyone take a guess at what the problem might be?

too much grease? depends on "how little" you put on there.

Cals grease shouldn't weaken the drag. The main purpose of grease on a drag is heat dissipation which is a non concern in a bass reel. I run Carbontex drags dry 90% of the time. My guess is you used the wrong kit or misassembled the drag stack somehow. I've installed hundreds of their kits without a single problem.

100% of the time for me.  I experimented both ways enough times that I was able to decide I prefer them clean and dry.  I have Carbontex in all my reels now except my Tatula's.

I am certain they weren't installed improperly. I guess the only logical thing to do is see how they are without grease.

I run mine lightly greased. Im usually fishing light line and prefer a smooth start up over max drag pressure.

Ensure that drag spring washers are either this way ( ) or this way )(
