Just drove past Lake Erie and the Niagara River on the way to work, both were like glass. There were a couple boats already on the water and three more going in at the boat launch. I'm so jealous.

I hear ya... Perfect day to fish... I am going to try and get out tonight to fish hopefully.

What were they biting on for you? As for river smallmouth, I managed this hog in the river this past friday. Pre spawn belly with huge shoulders on her. Very healthy fish, she's covered in foam, I did

  • Hey guys.  New to the forums, but was pleased to see such an active Buffalo/WNY thread. I was down at the Erie Canal overflow pond in Ellicott Creek Park on Tuesday.  Spent about two hours there

Biggest one maybe 2lbs I used blue and chartreuse bomber xs. Going today going to try a few new booyah double willow spinnerbaits.

We throw a lot of those double willow Booyahs in white on the River, catches a lot of fish. Gorgeous day today but stuck at work again. Lotta' trailers at the boat launch this morning but only saw a half dozen boats on the water, no idea where they all went. My buddy is out there now sending me reports, said they lost one laker so far and were heading for the Canadian shore of Lake Erie now.

I feel your pain... Been doing yard work since 9:00 am... Gorgeous day to fish... My cousin and his friends stopped over and asked me to go fishing at a private pond... Had to say no..

Heading to the pond right now

I'll get up there one of these days...

Oh wow bummer. I'm surprised the pike aren't in there yet. At least you got out, still better than not going.  No hope for me until at least Friday.

Picked up the boat today so may just skip shore fishing altogether this Spring and head right for the big water. I never have the boat this early but the guy called and wanted it out of there so I was happy to oblige.

I almost always fish the River up at the South tip of Grand Island out by Strawberry Island. I'll hit both the East and West River but can usually see Strawberry from wherever I am. I'll occasionally head down to the craziness near the mouth of the Canal but almost never get down to your part of the River.

Anyone ever fish the big pond off Dann Rd in Amherst?

Headed to Ellicott Creek this Monday... Where should I launch the Kayak if I want to get to that overflow pond?

Google search "Deerwood golf course", there a launch right across the street. It's at Sweeny and Robinson right near where Robinson crosses the Boulevard.

Here's a bigger view. You can still see the launch up at the top left where it says "Sweeny St" and the pond is at the bottom left next to the "E" in the word "Google". That's the closest official launch that I know of but you may able to slip a kayak right into the pond or the creek next to it. I have no idea what you need to launch one, I've never done it.

Glad to help anytime I can, heck, even I can't catch 'em all.

You can park within about 100 yards of either side, there are regular parking lots at each end. One side you have to cross a  grass field and the other you have to cross a road with low guard rails. I usually park on the field side at the closest picnic shelter and walk the ridge back to the pond to stay out of that field. It's always muddy in the Spring. Pretty easy place to get to and all legal because it's in a public park so no posted signs. I have been checked for license by the D.E.C. there several times so make sure to have it with you.

Nobody uses a kayak in that pond....one person in a kayak will disturb the fis hing for the 20 people on shore

I've always wondered about that place on Dann Road but haven't been there yet. I think you could kayak in the overflow pond if you were cool about and stayed out towards the middle. I don't think you'd spook the fish so much as tangle everyone's lines if you got too close. I had a 16 footer in there once and that certainly got me some dirty looks. Some of the other guys on here have had their boats in there too but I wouldn't do it again.
