What were they biting on for you? As for river smallmouth, I managed this hog in the river this past friday. Pre spawn belly with huge shoulders on her. Very healthy fish, she's covered in foam, I did

  • Hey guys.  New to the forums, but was pleased to see such an active Buffalo/WNY thread. I was down at the Erie Canal overflow pond in Ellicott Creek Park on Tuesday.  Spent about two hours there

Upper river on bike path along robert Moses

Nice pics Rsx..

Looks like I shoulda' stayed on shore with Jigger, I got skunked! I ended up hooking two fish today but lost both. Had about a 2# LM on a chatterbait come off as I was trying to lip him and lost a little smallmouth on a swimbait. Water temps were only mid 40's today, coldest water I've ever fished so I had no idea where to go or what to do. I did end up finding some fish both deep and shallow but couldn't get bit. There were a bunch of fish on the edge of the main channel right next to the Thruway and guys were catching fish there but I hated fishing right next to the busy road so I left after a few minutes. I work in a noisy factory and like some peace and quiet when I go fishing. I'm sure I could have caught some if I'd stayed but I just hated being right next to the thruway like that.

The other place I found fish and somewhere some of you guys should check out was Beaver Island Marina on Grand Island. That was full of fish of every species but I couldn't get bit there either. If anybody goes focus on the left (if you're on shore) side where there are holes in the break wall letting current in. Fish were stacked up in there but there was so much bait in there nothing would bite. There were thousands of those orange finned shiners or shad or whatever they are along with every sucker in the river but I also so a lot of perch, bass and a few pike. Might be worth a look for somebody.

I really didn't plan on fishing much today anyway so any time I did get was just a bonus. I was just tuning my electronics and making sure everything was cool with the boat (it was). Next trip will probably be Silver Lake for pike but it may be awhile, lotta' stuff to do at home right now. Here's the highlight of my day, a bald eagle sitting in a tree next to its nest on Strawberry Island. Too cool.

I'll be shore fishing until boat goes in this weekend.

I'll be painting my sons room and working in the yard wishing I was shore fishing. Busy couple weeks ahead but trying to get it all done before the fishing heats up.

Awesome pic Dave!

I was yakking 18 mile creek out near the mouth last week and saw one, too! Wonder if it's the same bird?

Let's hope it stays nice and warm out there!

Tight lines, gents.

Ouch, that one hurts!

Nice one Jigger, great color!

Awesome pic Dave.  I don't believe I've ever seen one in the wild.

I managed to get out for 2 hours today.  I ended up doing pretty well.  I went 7 for 8 on Smallies and 1 sucker.  They were all little guys, but still had a good time.  IMG_0896.jpgIMG_0900.jpgIMG_0904.jpg

The only thing I ever used was Power Pro until last year. The reason is very simple, it's what my dad used and I was never serious about fishing until last year.

Once I became addicted to all things fishing and did the research I switched.  Now the only thing I don't use is Power Pro :-D

I usually run a 10-15 mono main line with a 2-3 foot floro leader/tippet. Depending on the the clarity, my tippet will be either 4#, 6#, or 8#.

For my spinning rods, I run a pure floro 8#-12# main line.

Braid certainly has its uses... But being a shore angler, I don't really benefit from 90% of them and the visibility is a killer in the smaller creeks.

Here's some video of a few of my catches today.  I'm a junkie, I love going over video of previous catches.  My g/f, on the other hand, says that it's about as exciting as watching paint dry.

I love the braided nothing breaks off. It has no memory so it doesn't twist which is nice for lots of lures. I've been catching using watermelon red flake baby Brush hog ...Texas rigged.

Suffix 832 braid... love it..

Lures ain't cheap I don't like losing on a snag. I've yanked out way more with braided then with mono. Losing a $20 crankbait will ruin your day

I've pulled tree limbs in with that stuff lol...

I pulled up a shopping cart at the foot of Ontario st with 50 lb braided a few years ago

Any body fish any tournaments. I do 2 local ones. 1 invite only and 1 local  bar tournament. my partner moved to Florida looks like I might be going solo this year.

Oh man that is some killer video, I love that! What type of bait are you using with fly rod for bass like that? I used to throw small poppers on a fly rod for bass but would only catch little fish, like real little. Always wanted to catch bass on a fly rod and finally resorted to putting a spinning reel on one. Caught some bass that way and by the time I broke it I was loading up hooks with corn and catching carp with the fly rod. Only lasted for one summer but had fun with it for awhile. I still have a regular fly rod setup in the garage but haven't touched it in years.

I have some rods that are set up a little different but, for the most part, I spool my baitcasters with braid and my spinning gear with mono. I have one spinning rod set up with that Berkley nano-fil and it's awesome. At $20 a spool I only did the one but then I read up on here how guys back with mono and just use the better line for the last quarter spool or so. I will definitely do that the next time I need to spool up. I don't want to spend $20 per reel but I will certainly split a spool of that line between 2 or 3 reels if I use a mono backer.  My mono of choice has always been 8# Trilene XL, and my braids are a mixture of Spiderwire, the generic Power Pro at Cabelas, and some spools I got from my dad. Next spool I buy with definitely be 20# PP after all I've heard about it.

No tournaments for me, I'm just fun fishin'.

No tournaments for me. I'm like the "Calamity Jane" of fishing. I fall apart when I have more than one person around me, Drop tackle, bury my treble hooks into my gear, spill my split shot, throw birdsnests every other cast.

I was using a Centerpin reel in that video with a float rod.  I don't have the slightest clue how to fly fish. I, too, always thought they were fly reels when I saw them. They look like oversized Spey reels.

I've only been "pinning" for about 3 months. It was mainly for steelhead, but as you can see it catches just about anything. I don't know crap about fly reels but from what I've read, fly reels have a drag system. Centerpins do not have any form of mechanical drag, your hand is the only form of drag, so it's basically just you and the fish. Also, since the reel is just a cylinder on a central pin, the retrieve ratio is just 1:1.

The float rod is similar to a spinning rod except for its length. The rod in that video is 13'6". You generally fish everything under a float and let it drift down the entire run. The bait presentation is second to none.

I was fishing a white marabou jig under a float in the video. They were just crushing it.

I quit fly fishing a few years back. I wiped out in cat creek snapped my rod and was soaked in freezing water. I bought a nice st croix ultra light and did much better. I even used it in Alaska salmon fishing. Got laughed at by all the fly fisherman. But I did great the whole week I was there. I always said I would fly fish again but only for tarpon.
