I usually weigh my fish by holding it up, guessing the weight and then doubling it...  Works for me!

I think this is a pretty standard fish weighing method for a lot of people.

I highly recommend this method.  AND you don't get anywhere near the gills of the fish.  WIN WIN!!!

I use the rapala 50lb digital scale no hook it uses a lip grip/clamp thing.

Fish gripper Jr. and digital scale. I use the gripper on almost every fish I boat. Reach down while in the water and grip, They don't fall and flop around the deck, Hold tight when removing hooks, especially trebles. lay down next to ruler, hook the scale on, hold up for pic, set over side and release. Good for the fish- good for me!

To check scale I gripe a 4 Lb bag of sugar.

I like the fish gripper better than the plastic bag.  The bass were getting their fins in the bag, and tearing it up.

I don't normally weigh a fish if I'm not in a tournament. When I'm in a tournament I just put the hook of my scale thru the cull tag. Have been considering attaching a lip gripper to my scale so I can weigh them when I am fun fishing. Will probably go ahead and order one...I wish TW stocked them.

All I use is a stick, some 50 lbs. braid, and an assortment of dumbbells.

So is it okay to hold a bass by the jaw? I know with big saltwater fish like snook holding them from the jaw bass style is a 75% mortality rate.. Is it okay for bass because they weigh less? I have always wondered.. It seems widely accepted so I couldn't imagine it's too bad for them

Generally, the bigger the fish the worse it is on them. A fish's skeletal system isn't built to support it's own weight because they live in a nearly weightless environment. So a heavy fish held vertically by it's jaw is basically crushing itself. The whole damaging the jaw deal is a bit overplayed I think but I'm not a biologist and I've been wrong before. I've caught a lot of big bass and held them by the jaw for a quick picture and haven't lost one yet that I know of. Been lots of time I've fished the same water the next day and didn't see them floating and our lakes are small so they'd be hard to miss. You can always hold them under the belly for added support if they're really large.

i'm always holding them vertically when holding the jaw.  I only imagine it's less stress on them than holding them more horizontally by the jaw.
