How many rods?

Featured Replies

I'm doing some tournaments as a co angler and was wondering how many rods people usually take. I don't want to take too many but I still want as many options as possible. Thanks!

You should ask the boater how many  rods you should bring.  They usually give a number somewhere between three and seven.  If the boater doesn't care, I usually bring five to avoid having so many rods that they are in the way and get accidentally broken.

The FLW allowed 7 of which I only brought 7.  I agree with Mike, versatility is key.  I normally packed 5 casting and 2 spinning.  And whatever your boaters doing, do something a little different.

4 or 5 hopefully you only need 1

If you are able to talk to the boater before the tournament I would ask him how much room he has.  Both of the boaters I have done tournaments with have said to bring all of mine (10) they also let me put them in there locker.  But these were friends of mine, if you were in a BFL the it would be a random person and that might be different.

Nice that it's now 7 rods as it was 5 rods.

And like gulfcaptain mentioned, don't try to chase your boater's pattern.  Fish to your strengths and what you have confidence fishing.  Good luck

I Always end up with 6 or 7 rods but tend to end up using 1-2. 6 is pretty standard.

I bring 5 to the boat.  Multi day tournament I'll have another 3-4 in the truck.

I usually bring 6-8  depending on the water body. Never had a boater complain to me. I haven't had a bad experience with a boater yet, all have been good guys.

Last tournament went out with 6 came back with 5 didn't get them strapped down probably so the rough water got one.

To answer the question 6 is my norm

Me as a boater I wouldn't care. The more you have the more that might be in YOUR way not mine. :D But 5-8 should cover everything you need and all the water columns without having to retie a whole bunch of times.
