Rec for hooks for Fat Ika's.

Featured Replies

I started using FI a few years back and have had a lot of luck on them for green and brown bass as well. I have noticed one thing, at least for me, I tend to miss more hits than usual fishing these baits. I used to use a medium rod for these baits and went to a MH for this reason. It helped me immensely but, I still miss more than usual. Lets face it, Ika's are a lot of meat for a bait. I was using a 4/0 G-Lock Gammy and it helped my sliding down the hook problem. I am always open to suggestions, so.....?, what say you my friends? ;)

Well, my set up is a 7' Medium Power/ Fast Action spinning rig. The line is Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6. The hook is either Gamakatsu or X-Point 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hook. I rig the Fat Ika Tex-posed and skin-hooked. This is the ONLY way I fish them. If we are just counting the bites I detect, my hook-up ratio is north of 95%. Once hooked-up, estimated landing ratio approaches 100%.

Yea, I rig mine the same way RW. I would say my hookup rate is about 90%. Maybe I have been too quick on the draw. I just don't seem to have this problem with other soft plastics. Maybe its in my head, lol. I use #8 and a MH spinning rod for FI's in the local lake where I have been fishing lately. Maybe I should go back to the medium. I just don't like a medium for green bass myself but, I will give her another shot. I am in open water on the drop offs when I have been using them. By the way, how are the smallies doing down there? It has been a excellent year here so far. Lots of quality fish, and the bite has been non stop so far. I went with my buddy the last few times for green bass because he purchased a new glass boat and wanted to run it. I have had enough of the green ones and lake fishing. I am getting back in the tin boat jet drive with my good ole stick steering  and heading back up for some real bass, the  brown ones!!!,lol. ;D ;)

The smallmouth fishin' in 2007 has been a bust: no water on the weekends and when my partner has been guiding during the week, low numbers and small fish. Some years are like this, but we're done until fall. During the summer I target stripers on the river, green bass on my ponds. However, I am going over to Bull Shoals in a couple of weeks, so I might have an opportunity to do some good on a different lake. We'll see.

4/0 Owner Rig'n Hook.

I have done this before on this forum, but............

"ditto"

RW, do you rig it with the skirt near the eye of the hook (backwards)?

I use a Gammy 4/0 EWG offset for Fat Ikas.  You might want to analyze your hookset.  When I first started using this lure I missed a fish here and there.  I found that a harder snap of the wrists and forearms on the hookset helped me immensely.

I have been fishing these for a few years now also and we often catch rockbass with these things accidentely while bass fishing.  I can recall several times my partner says he's getting bit and cant hook em but we usually find that the rockbass or blue gills tear em up.  I'm not sure where you are fishing, but that could be one of the problems, at least it is for us.
