repairing a broken tip

Featured Replies

So on my way out the door this morning i broke about an inch off the tip of a 6'10 med/fast rod. Is it worth repairing or am I better off replacing it?

You might as well glue another tip on.  You can get a three pack of Fuji rod tips and rod tip glue from wally's for less than ten bucks.  It will be a little stiffer and slower than before, but it will still work fine.

Generally, shortening at the tip slows the action down.  I'm willing to bet that just an inch won't change it too much.  Those Fuji kits are great for this.

I've always thought shortening a rod made the action faster...maybe I'm wrong.

Call the rod company.  Received a used Hammer rod with the insert missing from tiptop.  Emailed them and they sent me a pack of four for free.  Emailed my address Saturday and had the tiptops Wednesday.

No, that's backwards.  Not always true, but 90% of the time it is.

An inch off a fast action Rod wil likely be noticeable but shouldn't make the Rod useless. Trimming a Rod blank from either end slows the action. In this case the affect should be minimal.

I'll fix it when I get home tonight. I loved the tip on that rod so I was pretty bummed when I saw it being crushed by the door haha

I've got three rods at home that I broke the ends off of.  One was right at the tip but the other two were about 6 inches, right above the second eye.  I broke the one last Friday and continued to use it.  I ended up catching a lot of fish on it yet so I figured I should just replace the tips.

Who hasn't smashed a rod in something or other?

That's why it's always wise to consider a company's warranty replacement plan when buying rods.

Personally, I'd replace it and chalk it up to experience. A rod never fishes the same with a glued-on tip. However, that's not to say it's worthless, but it will be different.

Used the Fuji kit from wallyworld on a spin rod once. Worked reasonable. But use better glue than what comes in the kit. The hot-melt stuff turned loose when I left my rod in the hot car one day. :o
