Probably, I´m pretty sure they didn´t sell a ton. The concept of a dedicated flipping reel is not new and it´s didn´t go well financially for Shimano with their "flipping" reel:

For starters, back in those days practically any reel had "flipping switch" and also, people found out that you can pretty much flip with any reel. :rolleyes:

As far as I know they did. You can flip and pitch with any reel as Raul mentioned. Just be sure to get one with a fast retrieve rate as well as a strong frame to hold up to the abuse.

You flip without using the reel, pitching you need a reel.
