Evinrude E-Tec smoking common?

Recommended Posts

Took a 2014 Stratos with a same year Evinrude E-Tec 115 horse on a test drive before purchasing and it smoked a bit when it first ran. Not dark smoke, fairly white smoke. The guys kid went fishing the week before with it, so it's not like it just came out of winterizing.

My friend said its not uncommon for 2 strokes to smoke but I have a 2000 Mercury 115 horse and it doesn't smoke.

I've researched that if it's cold out it can be steam, however, it was 83' degrees out today and this was when we were idling after coming off of plane.

Is is this a potential problem?

My 2 friends who both have newer E-Tecs said theirs never smoke.

We are taking it in tomorrow for an inspection prior to purchasing. The motor still has 4 years on the warranty. The first and only owner has never done anything to it as he said E-Tecs are maintenance free the first 3 years.

Get the inspection done, see what the pros say...they're the ones who have to do the warranty work if it goes TU...

It's something I would want checked.  I'm not sure to what degree you are saying it smokes but it should not be smoking.  Perhaps if they did a long extend idle, like trolling or something it might emit a small amount but that should clear up after a couple minutes of WOT.  Being white, it's possible it might be getting water in a cylinder, and that definitely ain't supposed to happen.

Maybe it was steam. The boat and trailer inspection showed that everything was fine. They ran the engine through a computer. Nice to know that a professional checked it out and that everything is good. $120 for piece of mind isn't bad when purchasing a used boat.

Yea, not sure why it is white. Either water or perhaps some additive like sea foam. I would get to the bottom of it before making an offer.
