Apologies as I'm sure this has been covered, but I'm having trouble coming up with a solution...

Are there any easy options for ordering spare/replacement parts for bait casting reels?  I have a line-up that consists of Shimano, Lews, and BPS reels.  I'm looking to get spare spool assemblies for most if not all of them.  My thoughts are that I can keep spare spools in a tackle box and when I want to switch lines on a setup it's as easy as swapping out spools and stringing up the rod.. I know I've wasted probably hundreds of dollars the past few years because I wanted to change lines out on a reel and had nothing to do with the "still good" line that I'm stripping off of my reels.

Im also looking for replacement spool tension knobs on BPS reels.. If I went to a retail store would they have this part available?  Seems plausible, but a lot of times when I show up at basspro with a question instead of just wanting to make a purchase I get met with a lot of blank stares..

Sorry for the relatively simple questions, but I've had a fair deal of trouble trying to find parts/answers from searching google..

Does anyone else do this with spare spools?  Any drawbacks to it that I'm not seeing?

 

Shimano sells parts directly, you can place your order and they will send it to you. I don´t know about Lew´s. BPS retail stores don´t carry spare parts since they don´t have reel repair in the premises, Outdoor World Reel Repair is whom you would like to contact.

BPS doesn't manufacture reels they contract various offshore mfr.'s, you need mfr, model and serial numbers for any spare reel parts. There are also after market suppliers for parts.

Shimano and Lews you should be able to just call and order the part, your reel schematics should list the part number of the spool assembly. I needed a part from lews once and they actually gave it to me free, you'd probably have to buy the spool assembly though. The spare spools is a great idea, allows you to switch up line very quickly and with no waste. I did it on my Conc. A this year, one with 40lb braid, one with 20lb fluoro for jigs and t-rigs. It has worked great. I'd imagine this idea would be best applied to a cranking rod, where you could easily switch between 10, 12, 14, 17 lb lines to adjust diving depth without the need to carry 4 setups or stripping off and wasting line.

If you're just looking for duplicate OEM spools, then go to the manufacturer directly.  Shimano and Daiwa are real easy to deal with, if you call them.  I think you'll have to call Lew's as well.  Other companies - Quantum comes to mind - has an automated web store front for parts.

I guess I'm so used to being able to find everything on the web that it rarely dawns on me to call places... Would be nice if some company made it one stop shopping but I understand why that's not entirely plausible.

 

You can order online directly from Shimano. Find your reel schematic and order away. I've ordered twice and each time I received parts in less than a week.

Makes it easy, if you know your part number.  Only thing is, sometimes if you call for just a couple cheap parts, they don't charge you.

yeah i called them last week about a small part and they shipped it out for free!
