whopper plopper 130 - downsize hooks?

Featured Replies

I have a couple of the 90 size.....just bought the 130 size.  it seems the hooks are almost too big.  especially for smallmouth (which is where I'm going to be using it, on St, Clair next week)  what are your guys thoughts on downsizing the hooks for smallies?

thanks...

I have a 130 and have kept the hooks, as is. I have caught  smallies without any issues. Good luck on St. Clair

The hooks are premium, I think are 4x so you could get a lighter gauge hook. I just started using it tonight and can't figure out if the bass are dumb and can't hit it right or I'm not setting the hook hard enough. Landed one small lmb an he fell off and flopped into a hole I had to get him out of.. Karma

The original ones has pretty terrible hooks, the newer ones have much beefier hooks but the hook points still don't seem that great. Hooked one fish with them and 2 of the 3 points rolled. I switched them out to st-56's.

The quality seems ok.  Just seem a bit too big ideally for smallmouth. ?

I catch smallies on the big hooks on my Deps 175s, they'll be fine.

I'm not sure what the hooks on the 130s are now, but when I bought mine I switched them to #2 4X EWG hooks and the smallies have had no issues with them.
