Best jighead style for heavy timber

Featured Replies

Hey guys, wondering what type of jighead you like for heavy, heavy timber.  I'm talking sticks and limbs laying all over each other on the bottom.  What i was using was just getting wedged in between the limbs and i lost quite a few.  Thanks.

Oldham's Lures Trailer Hitch Jig is the most popular jig on Toledo Bend due to the fact it comes through grass, brush, & timber so well. It's basically an Arkie style jig head which stands up right on the bottom but you will still lose jigs if you're fishing heavy cover.

Either an Arkie head or a flipping head.

Bet style jighead I've found is on the Omega jig. Right shape to pull over both brush and rock. The line tie is also slightly elevated so it doesn't take a beating from bumping into objects. Check them out on their website.

You might try a "Swim Jig" like an Outkast Swim Jig or Nichols Mango.

They're spire-pointed and use a nose-mounted line-eye (0-degree offset).

Also, be sure you really "Fan-Out" the bristles on the fiber weedguard.

The jig will come through nicely, but it's Game-Time when the line lassos a branch >:)

I'm having a hard time finding many websites that sell Oldham's jigs.  Heard a lot of good things about them, but there aren't many major distributors out there that I have found.  Where do you guys get your Oldham's?

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it. What are the colors that seem to work the best? I intend on fishing offshore weed patches and rock piles...  Also what is the weight that you use most?

You may want to check out SOB Fishing Products they sell Oldham's Jigs on line, Terry Oldham does not have a web site for selling tackle.

Black/Blue, Black Neon, Coon Tail-Black/Brown/Amber

I use ¼, 3/8, & ½ most of the time; I probably throw 3/8 oz more because that is the particular fall rate the bass on Toledo Bend prefer but I will go to ½ oz in the summer when fishing deep structure or 5/8 oz for matted Hydrilla.
