Calcutta Conquest 50 Problems (with video)

Featured Replies

I have recently purchased a Shimano Calcutta conquest from Japan.

Reel works almost perfect, but has one major issue.

The handle has some back play, and the spool moves when doing so.

Please excuse my commentary this was sent to the seller of the reel in Japan. I am not an expert so I may sound like an idiot.

Any Idea what it could be? I suspect something to do with the roller bearing? There are still parts for these available on Plat.co so any expert advice would be greatly appreciated! I hope i can get this fixed before spring rolls around.

Thank you for the welcome!

I can't wait to contribute to the forums and I hope to learn from other fine fishermen here.

Brief note

I have opened the gear side and The Pads are essentially liquid at this point. These will need to be replaced and I have them on the way.

Hope this can help in the diagnosing process.

Yes, drag washers.

I have no idea why i said pads.

Does the reel have any drag and /or was the drag backed off when you made the video.

I have the same issues with both The drag tightened and with the drag backed off.

Thank you for your help Maico1.

I will be doing a complete breakdown, cleaning and assessment and I will be posting the results here for anyone that may be interested.

Shes been completely broken down, cleaned and put back together.

However, still getting some back play, I believe it is the AR bearing gone bad.

I cannot find a AR bearing for the conquest in plat. I am not seeing it in the schematics here

I have an extra AR bearing from my other Calcutta (100GT TE) and it appears to be the same size. I don't know if they are even compatible. Anyone have any knowledge?

After cleaning, (the bearings, including AR bearing) the back play is worse, and in fact constant pressure on the handle moves causes the spool to travel..

Again, I can't find an AR bearing for the Conquest 50 on Plat. Any ideas what I should do next?

Contact Dad's Ole Tackle at 936-264-4167.  He's got many different Shimano AR clutch bearings.  JDM and USDM parts are the same.  One thing I did notice on a USDM Calcutta schematic was that the ARB was part of the handle sideplate assembly. These folks will know.  FWIW older Shimanos inherently had a measure of backplay.  Also, you have to be careful not to overlubricate the ARB or it will slip. I notice that you're not holding your thumb on the spool in your videos.  You're just rocking the handle back and forth.  I don't see anything wrong.

Found part # that may work  BNT 2396.  Dad's has it.

Another part # is BNT 1813  Check with Dad's.   Take your bearing out and compare it to what's available.  Like I said most USDM and JDM parts interchange.  You're clearly slipping. Did you grease the bearing?  Rinse it in mineral spirits, let it dry, and just barely oil it with a  Q-Tip. Good luck.

Just reread this post.  Can't hurt to try it.  Like I said this stuff interchanges.

I did precisely that while cleaning, ,which leads me to believe that the AR bearing is bad.

I compared it to my Calcutta 100GT TE AR bearing, and actually attempted to put it in, but it is not the same size and will not fit and I do not want to try to smash it in.

The BNT 1813 does not appear to be the same one I see in the Conquest 50.

I'm out of bullets.  Wish I could help you.  The Conquest 50 is a classic.  Send it to DVT.  It's worth investing in it.

Thank you for your help.

I will give DVT a call tomorrow and see what they can do.

After you cleaned the ar bearing, did you put grease on it? I put grease on an ar bearing once. And it did the exact same thing as your reel. After another good cleaning an a tiny bit of oil,it worked great. Otherwise as stated above, its money well spent to send it to DVT .

I might just do that. I have a huge fishing tournament coming up in April and I need this reel functional!

Many shimano  parts are interchangeable.

I have a ct 50gt  that had a bad AR bearing. During  cold weather  it would  slip bad, playing  out several  feet of line.

I had an old broken E5 laying  around  and guess what the AR bearings  are the same size.  I swapped  the AR bearings  out and haven't  had  a  problem  since  then.

Also, its not uncommon  for some shimano  reels to have a little back play in the spool. Some do seem a little  worst than others though.

With school and other things on my plate (and lack of expertise), I've sent this bad boy off to Delware Valley Tackle.

I appreciate the recommendations and the messages, from the reviews here I am sure Mike will fix her up good!

I'll keep you all posted on the outcome and the eventual set up.
