Spinning Reel Size : FC versus Braid ?

Featured Replies

  • Super User

I understand that a larger size spinning reel is better if using straight FC line (KVD uses a 4000 series with straight FC for bass) but does the same concept hold true for braided line ? Since there is little line twist with braid I would link a smaller size spinning reel (2500 series) would reduce the size of the braid line coils resulting in smoother / longer casts ? Your thoughts and experiences ?

A 2500 size reel is perfect for most applications.  As much as I enjoy the lightness of a 1000 size reel I find that my line management suffers. Some here use the smaller reels exclusively. I fish from shore so distance is more critical for me. I spin fish with braid only.  Fluoro definitely benefits from a larger arbor.

I use a 2500 or 3000 and I only use braid. I put 10lb on my 2500 and 15 on the 3000.

I use 1000 size Stradics and braid + leader for everything.

Braid, in my case, Power Pro Regular and Super Slick 8,

completely eliminates line management issues. I get zero

coiling and very long, smooth casting (esp with SS8).

Personally, I wouldn't use straight fluoro, but I love it as

a leader. When I did use non-braid lines, line management

was an issue, even down to 4# and 6# test. On a 2500

you want to use a limp fluoro.

KVD needs to try KVD line and lure conditioner. I no problems with FC on a 2500 size reel up to 10#. 5# on a 2000 size reel.

braid will have 0 coil issues.

Couple of things to keep in mind as well a larger spool will always cast farther and take up more line per turn of the handle all things being equal.

I use pflueger 3000 size reels with braid exclusively. I do not use backing, ever.  I willl run a flouro leader (seaguar blue label) at times depending on water clarity or if im drop shotting.

I use powerpro slick 8 in 15# and this is my 3rd year on it with zero problems with line twist or issues. I do on occasion get dig in, after a fish or hang up since my main use is senkos, but a quick cast and wind back with tension cures it too.

Me Too ~

However there is one 4000 size reel on a set up I use when 'hunting' down schooling fish busting on top.

The  Bigger reel & braid allows for launching cast in to orbit which keeps me from getting too close to & spooking a school.

A 4000 size reel will aid line management for heavier (12#>) mono or Fluoro and where uber long casts are required. Otherwise a 2500 is perfect for most bass fishing.
