Cranking Rod Confusion

Featured Replies

OK...So I'm looking at 2 cranking rods.  One is the Lew's David Fritts and the other is the BPS cranking stick.  Now, I've read and read and read some more and one thing that sticks out is you want a slower tip, Mod Fast or Moderate.

Today I'm looking at these two rods and it occurs to me that the BPS rod is nothing but Fast.  If most everyone says you should have a slower tip, why would the BPS be fast?

Is the fast tip a deal breaker on the BPS?  Should I go with the Lew's? Does anyone have other recommendations in the same price range?  I don't fish cranks all that much but I'd like to have the right gear when I do.  And if I do, it's usually shallow to medium cranks.

Whats the word, help a cranking newbie out.

Thanks!!

Rod-makers usually refer to slower action rods as 'moderate-fast' or 'medium-fast'.

A 'moderate-fast' tip is generally preferred for crankbaits with treble hooks to reduce tear-outs.

Though not as frequently mentioned, a moderate-fast tip is also helpful with 'slack prevention'

during twists, turns and jumps. On the other hand, an 'extra fast' taper will give you

quicker access to the rods backbone for moving fish quickly out of cover.

An 'extra fast' tip is also more sensitive, but for cranking that's rarely a deal-breaker.

Tip action is always a compromise, but whenever you're undecided it's usually best to go with 'fast' action.

The reason the crankin' stick is a "fast" action is because of where the flex of the rod is. The cranking sticks are fast but they are a glass composite so it is still very forgiving like most other cranking rods. The major difference is where the rod is going to hit the backbone, it will be fast for a glass rod but believe me, if it was a graphite rod it would be a moderate to a moderate fast action.

So I could, theoretically, get a moderate fast graphite and it would be the same?

A mod fast graphite = a fast composite rod?

I won't go there.

If you're using a composite blank, then presumably you've already addressed shock absorption.

I use the Lew's med. for my shallow and med. cranksbaits and love it. It's a winner for $79.

I use a mod/fast graphite rod for my cranking needs.

My favorite as well.

I would also prefer standard fast over mod actions.  Not a fan of the mods.
