Battery and Charger suggestions for Nucanoe Frontier

Featured Replies

I'm outfitting my Nucanoe with a Minn Kota Endura Max 55lb trolling motor.  Can you guys give me some suggestions for a battery/ single bank charger combo?

Im looking to spend $200-250 total, and would hit Basspro, Cabelas, West Marine, Academy, and several auto parts stores in close vicinity.  Even a Gander Mountain.

I would be looking for an asm battery.  How long do you need to go???  Your usage amperage and time are the critical two components.  I use the calculator to figure out how much i need.

Are you also running a sounder???

I think you will be in the 27 group minimum.  A true deep cycle will give you the best service and last the longest.

Just tried to locate you a battery at bps but they rate their deep cycles in CCA which is stupid because you dont use a deep cycle for starting battery.

Take a look at Norco Genesis marine battery chargers.

I use a 55lb MK Traxxis as the primary power on my canoe. I use a Group 24 battery and have plenty of power for up to 8-9 hours on the water...BUT, that's at slow speeds working my way around a lake.  If I was spending a lot of time motoring at higher speeds from spot to spot, my run time would of course be less.  I also run a sonar off that Group 24 as well.

So, as Angry John said, you really have to decide how much time you will be spending on the water and at what speeds and go from there.

On a "single-bank" charger, I'm not sure I understand what you mean by that.  I wouldn't expect that you would be mounting a charger inside your boat and leaving the battery in the boat.   Just get a regular battery charger and recharge the battery as soon as you can after every trip. The Schumacher charger has a lot of advocates on this board.

If you only need a bench type battery charger be sure it isn't over 15 amps.

Noco G1500 is a small single battery charger, pricy but reliable.

Thanks guys - Any brand preference on a group 27 battery?

I use a no name battery charger from Harbour Freight.  I hook it up to the battery on the evening before I go fishing.  Never had a problem.

I have a 2-bank 20 amp on board Noco Genius. Love it. The 20 amp is overkill and I should have went with the mini at 8 amps to save some money since I rarely fish back to back days. Plug my boat in when I get home and it takes care of the rest until I'm back out again. It's not just a "standard" battery charger but a "smart" charger. Does a lot more for your battery then just a standard charger does.

I use NOCO Genius 3500 and Interstate (size 27) batteries.  I really like the NOCO, but I do wish that I'd gotten a 2-bank charger, since most days I use more than one trolling battery

Thanks Chop - that's kind of what I was looking for.
