Best lure mods??

Featured Replies

What are the best or most common lure mods that may not be known about by someone not really deep into the sport?  Anything to spinnerbaits or buzz baits or especially Manns Baby Minus Ones??

i typically do the following:

-upgrades trebles on most crankbaits, especially my Baby Minus 1s.

- Upgrade my spinnerbaits that that have Colorado blades to Hildebrandt blades (heavier and more thump).

- Buzzbaits I drive with them attached to something on the truck to wear on the blade and get that extra squeak.

- any skirted bait I trim skirts depending on the situation.

I think anyone driving around with buzzbaits stuck to their truck is a little deeper in than they think.LOL. I honestly don't do too much. Maybe cut pieces of of plastics trim skirts nothing major.

Based on your opening post, you're no stranger to fishing and didn't leave many openings  :)

With regard to Hildebrandt spinner blades, they market all 3 styles but they use their own names.

Hildebrandt refers to 'Willow-leaf' as "Slim", 'Indiana' as "Standard" and 'Colorado' as "Idaho".

If you're looking for maximum thump than you would switch to a Colorado blade (Hildebrandt Idaho).

A curve ball is the Oklahoma blade which is midway between an Indiana blade and Colorado blade.

On some spinnerbaits you might want to invert the skirt to give it more billowing action.

On some models you can trim long skirts strands close behind the bend-of-the-hook (I do).

With respect to buzzbaits, you're idea of seasoning the blade for 'squeak' is a good one.

It seems that one buzzbait in the tackle box does all the catching, and all the others are on standby.

On jerkbaits, you can put a lead sticker to make it suspend or sink. Buzzbaits, put in front of a fan so that the blade squeaks. Add trailer hooks to your spinner baits and buzzbaits. Add scent or color to your soft plastics. Trim brush guard on jigs. Bend frog hooks up and out to increase hook up rates. These are just some other things I do to my lures.

You want more thump from a Colorado purchase a Cupped Colorado from lurepartsonline ( formerly Stamina Inc ), change your regular willowleaf blades for fluted willowleafs or wide willowleafs.
