shakey head rig

Featured Replies

a lot of guys use a ball head jig, or stand up type jig head that has a spring like looking thing attached to the jig head right above the hook.  You screw a small, 3" - 5" bait onto the spring, usually a small finesse worm, and embed the hook into it.  you cast to a target, let it sink, and basically shake the rod tip.  this causes the worm to shake it's tail seductively without moving much, if at all.

Here's a couple examples of the jigheads

I'd recommend the spot remover pro 1/8th oz model. It tends not to fall over keeping the worm standing straight up.

As described by several "pros", the correct technique for shaky worming is to jiggle slack-line with your rod-tip.

Let me ask you fellows something. How many of you have actually tested this technique in clear water

where the lure can be seen say...15 feet away?

I'm fortunate in living on a clear lake with a 100-yd long pier. Using spinning tackle and a 1/8 oz ballhead jig,

I've tested a Strike King 3x finesse worm whose tail floats vertically upright. When I jiggle slack-line with the rod-tip

the lure does not budge! The water between the point where the line enters the water and the lure lying on the bottom

absorbs all line movement. The lure just sits there looking up at me as if to say, "Exactly what are you trying to do?".

But, as soon as I twitch the worm delicately on a "tight line", the worm-tail comes alive, while the lure remains basically in place.

RoLo,

Your post is the first time I've ever heard that about the slack line.  I've always fished it on a tight line so I can feel what is going on.  Hmm....I guess to my benefit I haven't been paying attention.

Or maybe you've been paying attention to the right people, because you're doing the right thing.

As it happens I've read the need for a slack-line in more than one place, but soon learned that it's just a form of self-gratification :;)

That's why I put "pros" in double-quotes  ;)

Depending on how deep the water is and the water temperature 1/16-3/8 oz.

9 to 10 feet is the deepest

Best jig I've found is the Davis Sjaky Head SL model (long shank). I buy them in 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 oz sizes.

You can buy bulk bags from Coosa Tackle, and on-line dealer (around $9.99 for 25 pack).

They have a strong Nickle Coated hook and the heads are very consistent quality.

I always fish them on a tight line....Almost like a jig.draggin, hoppin, popping it...I also noticed that the worm didnt move when shaking it with a medium action rod like suggested...Found that a MH action rod makes this technique alot more efficient. Feel more bites, better hooksets, more control of your bait....

A spot-remover is not a shakey head.....Its a stand-up jig head, not meant to be fished like a shakey head...which is a round jighead meant for shaking.....Spot-remover is made for a vertical presentation, doesnt work well as well casted out as a true shakey head jighead....

I use Bite-me jigheads, They have a 60 degree line-tie and come throw cover better than any of the other heads i have tried for shaking and dragging.. I think KVD endorses them, i know i read they were the ones he was using when he caught the 11lber...

I use 1/8 and 1/4 ounces depending on current,depth,etc.....fished on 10lb flourocarbon.

Unlike a couple folks, I've found that my best success comes from the following shakey head set up:

ML Shimano Crucial 6'6 Rod with a Daiwa Tierra 2500 spinning reel.

I lined mine with 15lb Power Pro braid and use a 10' to 12' leader of 10lb P-Line Halo (Uni to Uni Knot). I like the Luck ''E'' Strike Finesse Football Jigheads; 1/8oz and a Green Pumpkin Zoom Finesse worm with the last 1/4" of the tail dyed fluorescent yellow ( I like Spike It / Garlic).

That's exactly right.

To get maximum quiver and shake, a spherical head is needed because the curvature is unbiased (equidistant from head center).

Any head with a distinctive shape (arkie, standup, bullet-nose, banana-head, football, etc)

is going to suppress certain movements or vibrations because the distance varies between the head center and the exterior.

Anyway, for shaky worming I really like Iaconelli's Tru-Tungsten Weed Wacker (in 1/8 oz).

Only the forward half is spherical but only the forward hemisphere ever touches the bottom.

That looks deadly Brent!

A secure keeper and a nice up-angle for the worm tail.

Roger

Awesome idea, Brent....

One of the best ideas and designs I have seen in a long time and to come from someone that sells soft plastics also say alot.... ;) Any other bait co. would recommend the head that tore up the most worms.lol....

This might cut into Zoom's finesse and trick worm sales....Ed chambers will not be happy ;D

That is def a great idea.  I must say im very intrigued and when you get the stock let me know ill buy a few to try them out.  Keep up the good work.

Are you insinuating the Pros would mislead us just to sell a product?

Well...let's just call it a clever diversionary tactic laughing7.gifroflmao.gif

I prefer to use the Gamakatsu round heads in 1/8 or 3/16 just because they are on a 3/0 hook.  I have used others (Coosa Tackle, Arkie, and a couple more)  and want to try those by Picasso. I just really like to have them on a 3/0 hook because any smaller hook and I have trouble with the worm wadding in the gap.   I fish mine on both slack line in less than 10' of water and tight line in over 10'.  I have also heard to fish them on a slack line, but if it works then why fix it.

Thanx Rolo.   We've (me and my dad) have been experimenting with shakey heads and stand ups, and just couldn't find any setup or combination of setups that really did the job.  my dad started making these last year, and we already sold out, and our hooks just got out of backorder.  (mustad moved h.q's)  Anyhow, we carry them in 2/0 to 5/0.  It's a mustad 60 degree J-Bend Needlepoint Side-eye hook with a number 8 matzuo holder.   you get all that?  LOL    we should have them in stock in the next few months.  Some guys will bend the holder hook over and run the whole nose of the bait on like a trailer, and some stick it through the nose like normal and run the worm down to the holder and mash the hook into the nose of the worm.   the worm never slips down, just have to  reset the hookpoint end.

brent   (not sure if you can tell, but i'm pretty proud of it)

Can't wait for yet another of your great products. I will be ordering these right when they come out. =)

I've been looking for a quality shakey head jig for a while now, and looks like i might have found it!  Kudo's to you and your dad Brent.  Awesome work!!  Can't wait to try some out!!
