Water Clarity & Plants

Featured Replies

So there's a small farm pond that I fish with my buddies. During the January/ February months the water was pretty clear and it was a really pretty pond. But now, the water clarity is next to none and the water looks like chocolate milk. Could this be due to the new spring plants coming out? Will the water clarity go back to what it was? Thanks

Sounds to me more like spring run-off. Water leaching into the pond from spring run offs and rains. It should clear in a couple of weeks - if it's not a man-made issue.

Due to the smaller water volume in a pond, they're more susceptible to changes in water clarity.

For instance, one heavy rainfall can result in a brown muddy pool,

but since your pond was previously clear, that rules out trophic state.

Some ponds are perennially murky, but since your pond was formerly clear,

after the process of sedimentation it will be clear again.

Usually, plants will help to filter the water out some and actually help clear the water. I agree with the other suggestions that you should it start to clear up as the sediment settles.
