I am wondering if any of you have  engaged this program as a mentor. Since my wife passed 6 months ago my life seems to have void  that needs attention. My closest family lives  over two hours away so its seldom a day trip. Just to tough on this old body. I have considered a dog companion, not onto that one just yet.

So to the question have  any of you been a big brother and if so how did it work for you.How did  it work  for your subject or partner. Would you do it again?. Any advice for me?

I was a "Big", for a year or two and got volunteer of the year for the program. It was a very easy process and I really enjoyed it. I used to pick up my "Little" Ernest once a week and go do whatever we felt like doing. These kids really just need something positive to do in their lives and are generally happy doing most anything. We went fishing a lot since we both loved fishing, played disc golf a few times, went hiking, played basketball, just really basic stuff. I would have liked to stay in the program but once we moved away from the city it was too far for me to carry up my end of the bargain so I had to stop. 

If it's something that interest you I would highly suggest setting up an appointment to talk with a case manager about it.

You will find it very gratifying! Like the op said I did it right after I left the military but gave it up when I moved.

I was a mentor for a young man at our church program. it its gratifying. and with all the bad stuff out there, they need some good advice and wisdom. I'm sure if you choose this, any young person would be lucky to get you as there big brother. funny thing is sometimes they may end up teaching you as well. thanks for caring for kids!
