Looking to start buying a couple bait casters soon. I already have a spinning setup and want a 7' MH/F. I was looking to buy one more rod for smaller square bills (KVD 1.5), and top waters like spooks and poppers. What could you recommend as far as rod reel and line for throwing these?

To me that's two different rods.7'MM on the cranks and a 6'7" MF for the topwater.

Squarebills and walking baits have the benefit of working well on many different rod and line setups. Rod length will depend on your height and need for maximum casting distance. You're going to get 1,001 different answers to this question because we are firmly in the territory of preference here. Squarebills are fun because you can manipulate their diving depth based on line diameter and rod position. Also that 7' MHF will likely be a very good rod for 1/2 oz range walking baits.

 

My setup is higher end so name dropping probably won't do you much good but I prefer a 7' rod, either a Medium that runs on the heavier side or a lighter MH (brands vary, M and MH have no real standard), with a Mod-fast action. That gets paired with a mid-6 gear ratio reel and 15 lb Power Pro braid with a 3'-ish mono leader that varies based on cover, depth, etc. I fish squarebills around grass so the braid helps to rip the baits free. The thin braid also helps bomb spooks and set hooks at a distance. As a bonus, the same setup fishes lipless cranks very well.

the MB flat side special would be ideal IMO if it falls in your budget. you dont need to spend this much on a squarebill/topwater rod but it sure is nice to.
