I don't NEED another rod, but...

Featured Replies

I'm looking to pick up an all around casting rod for the days I just want to take one rod with me. I have been looking at both the Powell Max 3D 723 and Dobyns Fury 733, my plan was to use it for traps, flukes/senkos, spinnerbaits, jigs, and paddletails (mainly 3.8" Fat Impacts weightless/chikubi rig). Which of these two rods would you guys recommend and also the reason for one over the other.

Both are terrific rods.  I own rods from both companies and ironically Gary Dobyns helped design many of the Powell rods.

I own and LOVE LOVE LOVE my Powell Max 683CEF.  It is one of the original series, not a MAX 3D but I spoke with the owner of Powell and he assured me the new rod is just a slight upgrade and they would play the same.

Go read the rod review that Tackletour did on this rod.  It is the most versatile rod I own, and that includes 11 other baitcasters.  Here is the review   http://www.tackletour.com/reviewpowell683cxfastpg2.html

The 723 is a very similar rod but since I have never fished one I have a harder time suggesting it plays like the 683.

There is nothing wrong with choosing the Dobyns. I fish some of those and love them.  I just know how versatile the Powell is.  It just seems to always make it onto my deck no matter where I am fishing.

By the way the rod monkey said yes you do need another new rod !!!

You always need another rod.?

I am just getting back into fishing and I must agree...

You always need another rod!

And a reel to try on it!

Wow, I thought shooting was expensive

Thanks for the info. I know both rods have great reviews, I think I'm leaning towards the Powell. I have iRods with the same type of skeletal reel seat that I really like. For some reason I feel that the handle/reel seat on the Fury would be less sensitive than the exposed skeletal of the Powell.

Can you attest to the sensitivity of the Powell vs the Dobyns?

You can buy that Powell rod at American Legacy right now and get a free diesel rod with it

Is this an online deal or in store? Can you choose the Diesel rod?

It is online, they give you a choice of 3 different diesel rods to choose from I believe. Check their website out. I am on their email list and get email blasts when they have deals.

I'm not seeing anything about that on the website. I even added the rod to the cart and still nothing. Maybe they are not doing that promotion anymore or they are out of Diesels...

After you order the max rod they call you and ask which diesel rod you want according to the email. Give them a call

877-402-6350

Yep I just saw this e-mail too. If you order a Inferno or Max 3D you get a free Diesel.  Can't beat that.

I may have to take advantage of this deal before they run out of Diesels... Maybe Ill get the Max 3D 723 and a Diesel 723 (if they have it)

Are they all Casting rods? If so I could take the 702 as a finesse/shakeyhead rod...

That's a good question.  The email doesn't say.  I don't see how to access the deal from the website.  Maybe just call the store as suggested.

Well for the 702 length and power, I'm not going to say no to a free rod! Regardless if its spinning or casting. I have a feeling it may be spinning. I don't think they ever made a ML Casting Diesel, I believe they were only M and up.

You've done your homework, both are tremendous blanks.

In fact, I'd hesitate to recommend one over the other.

IMHO if someone is giving away something like  that there is definitely an issue.

Not necessarily. I have bought a reel from a trade show (Bass-A-Thon at Anglers Marine) and the rep threw in a free rod. The rod has lasted me quite a while, in fact I still have it! I bought a 2nd Gen Revo SX years ago when it first came out and the Berkley Rep gave me a Vendetta rod, SpiderWire tackle bag, and a spool of Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon to go along with it.

There is no issue with the Diesel rods they are giving away.

Powell upgraded from the Powell Diesel line to the Powell Nusance line of rods. They have stopped making them for awhile now.

I bet American Legacy had some left over in their stock and just wants to clear old inventory.  Remember Powell clearly made everyone aware these rods came with original manufacturer defect warranty only.  If you broke it they would not do any type of partial cost replacement, like the warranty they offer on their normal rod lines.  The rods were priced for less than say an Inferno costs to replace under its normal warranty.

That makes them no less worth their original price and for free it is a no brainer.

Go jump on it.  The 702MLEF is definitely going to be a spinning rod.

If you were to purchase a Nusance 702MLEF it would cost $90.

So I pulled the trigger and ordered the Powell Max 3D 723 from American Legacy, I also had some rods pre-appraised for a trade in which should amount to about $75. All in, I spent about ~$100 and got two Powell Rods out of it! The Max 3D that I wanted and a free Diesel 702!

That is a good deal for sure.  If you match the Diesel with a reel like the Pflueger President in a 6930 or 35 it will cost you about $60 from Dicks and other locations If you want a lighter reel look at an Okuma RTX30 or a Pflueger Supreme.  They are all very reliable reels and none cost more $100.

Check out a Daiwa Tatula CT for a nice reel to match the 723.

I ordered a Tatula SV TWS XSL that I will try out with the Max 3D or I could put my Curado 71HG on it, I havent decided yet. I already have spinning reels that I am going to pair the Diesel with. Either an Okuma Trio 20 or a *** Creed X 1000. I have a No *** 7'ML with the Okuma Trio on it so I may leave that combo alone and put the Creed on the Diesel.

I am dying to try out one of those Daiwa Tatula SV but honestly I have replaced 6 reels in the last 12 months. I am trying to keep the Monkey away for a little while.
