Lewis Smith Lake?

Featured Replies

Anyone know what the fishing is like on smith lake? Making a trip soon just seeing how the bites been

A friend of mine lives pretty close. As of a week ago he was catching some pretty decent spots there. Slow bite but decent fish when he got a bite.

I've only fished it twice so far, but it fishes the same as any deep reservoir loaded with spots. Main lake points, channel breaks into the main lake, flats connected to the main lake, big rocks, transition spots on the bank, and the backs of creeks at the in-flow all had fish. In the fall they will be under docks.

They take longer to get active again after the spawn so fish little. A Ned rig, finesse jig, or something tiny like a Custom Leech will get you numbers. If you shaky head run a 4" worm. If you're looking to catch big fish throw a jig to the bank, swimbaits across points, and nail weighted wacky Senkos in open water.

Thanks guys, I haven't been on the lake since last year. We were catching them between docks with crankbaits. I'd like to try more main lake stuff this go around

I've never fished Lewis Smith Lake but know that it held the former world-record spotted bass for many years.

Sadly, spots transplanted into California stripped Lewis Smith of the natural record.

Within the spot's native range, I believe Lake Lanier, GA is the strongest contender of Lewis Smith, AL.

Smith is an awesome fishery. I've always enjoyed that lake. Lots of shallow and deep structure to fish. Loaded boat docks, points, grass and brush piles. Just about anything you can imagine, except mats.
